  1. 11. Experimental studies in brain tumours : with special regard to multidrug resistance and the ErbB-family

    Author : Ulrika Andersson; Roger Henriksson; Beatrice Malmer; Erik Blomquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; glioma; meningioma; endothelium; MDR; Pgp; MRP1; LRP; MGMT; EGFR; ErbB2; ErbB3; ErbB4; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; onkologi; Oncology;

    Abstract : Primary brain tumours, and especially the most common form malignant gliomas, usually display a pronounced resistance to other treatment modalities when surgery fails to cure. Growth factors, such as EGF and its receptor, frequently amplified and overexpressed in malignant gliomas, and factors associated with multidrug resistance have been suggested to at least partially explain the poor outcome. 2. 12. Colorectal cancer and radiation response : The role of EGFR, AKT and cancer stem cell markers

    Author : Sara Häggblad Sahlberg; Bo Stenerlöw; Bengt Glimelius; Marika Nestor; Torgny Stigbrand; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; colorectal cancer; radiation; AKT; EGFR; cancer stem cells; CD133; CD44; Biomedical Radiation Science; Biomedicinsk strålningsvetenskap; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The primary treatment for colorectal cancer is surgery. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy, sometimes combined, are also frequently used to diminish recurrence risk. In response to radiation exposure, several cellular signaling cascades are activated to repair DNA breaks, prevent apoptosis and to keep the cells proliferating. READ MORE

  3. 13. Piperaquine - Bioanalys, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics

    Author : Joel Tärning; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Malaria is one of the most abundant parasitic diseases in the world affecting many of the poorest economies. The estimated prevalence is 300 to 700 million clinical episodes each year with up to 3 million deaths. READ MORE

  4. 14. Algorithmic discovery, development and personalized selection of higher-order drug cocktails : A label-free live-cell imaging & secretomics approach

    Author : Efthymia Chantzi; Mats G Gustafsson; Ulf Hammerling; Andreas Bender; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; drug combination discovery and development; personalized pharmacotherapy; higher-order drug combination analysis; quantitative label-free live-cell imaging; secretomics; cell-cell communication; deep learning; convolutional neural networks; data mining; MapReduce; resampling; generalized highest single agent; COMBImageDL; COMBSecretomics; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Pharmacology; Farmakologi; Engineering Science; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract : An upward trend in clinical pharmacology is the use of multiple drugs to combat complex and co-occurring diseases due to better efficacy, decreased toxicity and reduced risk of evolving resistance. Despite high late-stage attrition rates and the need for multi drug treatments, most drug discovery and development efforts are still mainly focused on new one-size-fits-all monotherapies. READ MORE

  5. 15. Tumour Survival Signals and Epigenetic Gene Silencing in Multiple Myeloma : Implications for Biology and Therapy

    Author : Charlotte Fristedt Duvefelt; Helena Jernberg-Wiklund; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on multiple myeloma (MM), a haematological malignancy that still remains incurable. The pathogenesis of MM is not fully understood and there is a large intra-tumour and interclonal genetic variation in MM patients. READ MORE
