  1. 1. Environment-Sensitive Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems

    Author : Jian Qin; Mamoun Muhammed; Marcus Textor; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : Drug delivery systems (DDS) with multiple functionalities such as environment-sensitive drug release mechanisms and visualization agents have motivated the biomedical community as well as materials chemists for more than a decade. This dissertation is concerned with the development of nanoparticles for multifunctional DDS  to tackle several crucial challenges in these complex systems, including polymeric nanospheres which respond to temperature change, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles/polymeric composite for magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers, immunoresponse of nanomaterials and injectable magnetic field sensitive ferrogels. 2. 2. Skin hydration - How water and osmolytes influence biophysical properties of stratum corneum

    Author : Sebastian Björklund; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stratum corneum; diffusive transport; permeability; flow-through cell; Franz cell; transdermal drug delivery; water activity; vapor pressure; osmotic gradient; relative humidity; ceramide; free fatty acid; cholesterol; keratin filaments; natural moisturizing factor NMF ; urea; glycerol; molecular mobility; 13C natural-abundance solid-state NMR; polarization transfer; isothermal calorimetry; impedance spectroscopy; X-ray diffraction;

    Abstract : The outermost layer of skin (i.e., the stratum corneum, SC) is the interface that separates the water-rich inside of the body from the relatively dry external environment. SC forms an effective permeability barrier, which has to be overcome in transdermal drug delivery. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tamiflu in the Water : Resistance Dynamics of Influenza A Virus in Mallards Exposed to Oseltamivir

    Author : Anna Gillman; Josef D Järhult; Björn Olsen; Shaman Muradrasoli; Elena Govorkova; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Influenza A virus; avian influenza; oseltamivir; neuraminidase inhibitors; resistance; environmental; Mallard; waterfowl; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : The natural reservoir of influenza A virus (IAV) is wild waterfowl, and all human IAVs have their genetic origins from avian viruses. Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are currently the best drugs for treatment of human influenza; therefore, the orally available NAI oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) has been stockpiled worldwide as part of pandemic preparedness planning. 4. 4. Improved Molecular Understanding of Lipid-Based Formulations : for Enabling Oral Delivery of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs

    Author : Linda C. Alskär; Christel Bergström; Brendan Griffin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lipid-based formulation; poorly water-soluble drug; solubility prediction; molecular properties; lipid digestion; precipitation; solid state; intestinal solubilization; in vitro in vivo correlation IVIVC ; coadministration; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : The majority of emerging drug candidates are not suited for conventional oral dosage forms, as they do not dissolve in the aqueous environment of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Consequently, a large number of enabling formulation strategies have emerged. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optical characterization of potential drugs and drug delivery systems

    Author : Erik Rosenbaum; Lennart B-Å Johansson; Sven Engström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pilicide; Ganglioside GM1 micelles; Drug Delivery; Elecronic Energy Transfer; UV-Vis Absorption; Fluorescence Spectroscopy; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : This Thesis is a characterization study on substances having potency as drugs as well as on a lipid based drug-delivery matrix. The optical properties of newly synthesized molecules with proven pilicide properties have been characterized with several spectroscopic methods. READ MORE
