  1. 1. Co-disposal of waste rock and lignite fly ash to mitigate the environmental impact of coal mining

    Author : Asif Qureshi; Björn Öhlander; Christian Maurice; Thomas Pabst; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acid mine drainage AMD ; coal mine waste rocks; coal fly ash; co-disposal; mixing blending; dry-cover; prevention neutralisation; Tillämpad geokemi; Applied Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Waste rocks (WRs) from coal mining and fly ash (FA) from coal combustion were studied to determine the potential of the WRs to generate AMD, FAs to neutralise it and estimate their impacts on environment. The ultimate goal was to develop a methodology based on co-disposal to mitigate the environmental problems associated to both wastes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effectiveness of reclamation by backfilling and sealing at Kimheden open-pit mine, northern Sweden

    Author : Lucile Villain; Erik Carlsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Reclamation of mine sites is a very recent concept on the scale of mining history. It involves the prevention or mitigation of the environmental impacts from mining, and the establishment of sustainable post-mining uses of the land. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reclamation of acid-generating waste rock by in-pit backfilling and sealing : An evaluation of the Kimheden mine site, northern Sweden

    Author : Lucile Villain; Bernhard Dold; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : The notion of mine site reclamation is very recent compared to the history of mining. In thepast, mine sites were left as is following termination of the operations, but modern regulationsrequire anticipation of long-term contamination of the surrounding environment and return ofthe land to a sustainable use. 4. 4. Sulphide oxidation, oxygen diffusion and metal mobility in sulphide-bearing mine tailings in Northern Sweden

    Author : Lena Alakangas; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Large quantities of sulphide-bearing mining wastes produced from ore processing are deposited throughout the world. Sulphide oxidation in the wastes may release acidic water with high concentrations of metals to the environment. Remediation strategies are usually site specific, since the physical and chemical properties of the wastes vary. READ MORE

  5. 5. Novel advances using sewage sludge in engineered dry covers for sulphide mine tailings remediation

    Author : Peter Nason; Charles Cravotta; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Effective remediation of sulphide-bearing mine tailings is a fundamental aspect in mine plan development. Novel solutions to replace virgin materials in engineered dry cover amendments using sewage sludge biosolids (SS) were evaluated in laboratory-, pilot-, and field-scale experiments. READ MORE
