16. Enhancing spruce defence against an insect pest : effects of somatic embryogenesis and methyl jasmonate treatment
Abstract : Enhancing plant resistance against pests has the potential to become a sustainable alternative within forestry. Exogenous application of the plant defence signalling hormone methyl jasmonate (MeJA) as well as propagation through somatic embryogenesis (SE) has been shown to increase Norway spruce (Picea abies) plant’s resistance to the major forest regeneration pest the pine weevil Hylobius abietis. 17. Laboratory Ventilation Systems: An Analysis of the Function and Flow Stability of Different Ductwork Design Alternatives
Abstract : One of the prerequisites for high safety in laboratories for chemical and microbiological research is a well-functioning ventilation system. The most typical safety measure in these laboratories is to use a fume hood as a place for activities that can cause dangerous emissions to the room air. READ MORE

18. LXR and aromatase knock-out mice : animal models providing insight into human diseases
Abstract : In our characterization of mouse strains carrying mutations in nuclear receptor and aromatase genes we have found phenotypes which resemble four human diseases: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Sjögren s syndrome (SS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The work in this thesis was designed to understand the roles of LXRalpha, LXRbeta and aromatase in development of these diseases and to investigate whether these animal models help us (1) to understand the etiology of the corresponding human diseases and (2) to develop new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of these diseases.
