  1. 11. Metabolic and ovarian consequences of perinatal sex steroid programming

    Author : Camilla Alexanderson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : programming; sex steroids; insulin resistance; skeletal muscle; adipose tissue; ovary;

    Abstract : Endocrine and metabolic disturbances in adulthood may stem from insults such as nutritional and hormonal alterations that occur at critical periods in pre- or postnatal life – a process known as programming. This means that suboptimal conditions in utero and early life may contribute to adult reproductive and metabolic impairments such as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. READ MORE

  2. 12. Spinal cord injuries in Sweden : studies on clinical follow-ups

    Author : Peter Flank; Fahlström Martin; Anna Ramnemark; Richard Levi; Kerstin Wahman; Eva Denison; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Tetraplegia; paraplegia; cardiovascular disease; prevention; anthropometry; physical activity; rehabiliteringsmedicin; Rehabilitation Medicine;

    Abstract : A spinal cord injury is a serious medical condition, often caused by a physical trauma. An injury to the spinal cord affects the neurotransmission between the brain and spinal cord segments below the level of injury. The SCI causes a loss of motor function, sensory function and autonomic regulation of the body, temporary or permanent. READ MORE

  3. 13. Interaction between dietary factors and genetic risk for lipoprotein traits and cardiovascular disease

    Author : Sophie Hellstrand; Diabetes - kardiovaskulär sjukdom; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diet; polyunsaturated fatty acids; diet quality index; fatty acid desaturase; blood lipids; lipoproteins; polymorphisms; genetic risk score; gene-diet interaction; cohort; epidemiology; cardiovascular disease;

    Abstract : In previous studies, a high quality diet has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to a low diet quality, and specific “healthy” diet components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of CVD. However, results from epidemiological studies have been conflicting. READ MORE

  4. 14. Fatty acids induce potentially atherogenic changes in extracellular matrix proteoglycans

    Author : Mariam Rodríguez-Lee; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : proteoglycans; glycosaminoglycans; fatty acids; smooth muscle cells; hepatocytes; LDL binding; remnant clearance; insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes;

    Abstract : Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are associated with an increased prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). A key step in the initiation of atherogenesis is retention of low density lipoproteins (LDL) in the intima by chondroitin sulfate (CS)-rich proteoglycans (PG). READ MORE

  5. 15. Lipid-related genes and their associations with coronary heart disease

    Author : Ci Song; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a complex disease caused by the long-term progression of atherosclerosis. Lipids, including high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) are well established biomarkers for CHD, and are used to predict individual 10-year risk for CHD both in the Framingham risk score and in the System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (SCORE) project.
