  1. 1. Clinical Impact of Bloodstream Infections – Characterization, Risk factors and Outcome

    Author : Martin Holmbom; Håkan Hanberger; Christian G. Giske; Lennart E Nilsson; Mats Fredrikson; Åse Östholm Balkhed; Ralph Peeker; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bloodstream infection BSI ; Antimicrobial resistance AMR ; Extended spectrum β-lactamase ESBL ; ESBL-producing Enterobacterales; Multidrug-resistant; Urinary tract infection; Sepsis; Epidemiology; Prehospital delay; Community-acquired BSI; Hospital-acquired BSI; Community-onset BSI;

    Abstract : Bloodstream infection (blood poisoning) and antibiotic resistance are increasing worldwide, and already cause the loss of millions of human lives each year. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), bloodstream infections (BSIs) represent 20% of global mortality on a par with cardiac infarct, stroke, and major trauma. READ MORE

  2. 2. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Jonas Fyrestam; Conny Östman; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Porphyrins; heme; phototherapy; antimicrobial resistance; singlet oxygen; photosensitizer; bacteria; HPLC-MS MS; oral bacteria; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Escherichia coli; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates. 3. 3. Extended-Spectrum ß-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae : Antibiotic consumption, Detection and Resistance Epidemiology

    Author : Åse Östholm Balkhed; Lennart Nilsson; Håkan Hanberger; Hans-Jurg Monstein; Anita Hällgren; Mats Kalin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Extended-Spectrum ß-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae; Antibiotic consumption; Detection Methods; Multiplex PCR; Resistance Epidemiology; Multi-resistance; E. coli; ESBL; fecal carriage; faecal carriage; travel;

    Abstract : ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae are emerging worldwide and they are frequently multi-drug resistant, thus limiting treatment options for infections caused by these pathogens.The overall aim of the thesis was to investigate ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a Swedish county. 4. 4. Antimicrobial Resistance and Production of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases in Enterobacteriaceae from Birds in Bangladesh

    Author : Badrul Hasan; Björn Olsen; Åsa Melhus; Yvonne Agersø; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The dissemination of members of the Enterobacteriaceae family with extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) has become a global concern. ESBLs and MBLs have been reported in humans, domestic animals, wildlife and the environment, and their isolation frequencies are increasing rapidly worldwide. READ MORE

  5. 5. Quantifying effects of antimicrobial drug combinations by modelling and simulation

    Author : Chenyan Zhao; Lena Friberg; Elisabet I. Nielsen; Shampa Das; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; modelling and simulation; antibiotic combination; model-based translation; antibiotic resistance; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is becoming an accelerating issue, both in the treatment of nosocomial infections and for public health in general. There is a pressing need for innovative methods to understand how available antibiotics could be combined to overcome and limit the emergence of resistance. READ MORE
