  1. 1. Earthquake Sources and Hazard in northern Central America

    Author : Diego José Cáceres Calix; Ota Kulhánek; Vladimir Schenk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Northern Central America; Probabilistic Seismic Hazard; Body waveform modeling; Seismic Active Deformation; Earthquake Triggering; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : Northern Central America is a tectonically complex zone defined by its borders with Cocos and North America plates. The Middle America subduction zone and the strike-slip motion along the North America-Caribbean plate boundary, in that order, control most of its deformation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Earthquake Sources, the Stress Field and Seismic Hazard : A Study in Eritrea and its Surrounding

    Author : Lijam Zemichael Hagos; Roland Roberts; Hossein Shomali; Kuvvet Atakan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Seismic hazard; Focal mechanism; Moment tensor inversion; Stress field; Afar depression; Eritrea; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Presented in this thesis are some basic concepts and applications of seismic hazard analysis and the elements that influence the amplitude and geometric attenuation of earthquake ground motion. This thesis centers on the identification of the styles of failure, focal mechanisms, and the state of regional stress in the study area. READ MORE

  3. 3. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Author : David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN. 4. 4. Prediction of Strong Ground Motion and Hazard Uncertainties

    Author : Behrooz Tavakoli; Ota Kulhanek; Dieter Mayer-Rosa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Disaggregation; Ground motion; Monte Carlo simulation; Seismic hazard; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to provide a detailed description of recent methods and scientific basis for characterizing earthquake sources within a certain region with distinct tectonic environments. The focus will be on those characteristics that are most significant to the ground-shaking hazard and on how we can incorporate our current knowledge into hazard analyses for engineering design purposes. 5. 5. Seismic high-frequency content loads on structures and components within nuclear facilities

    Author : Cecilia Rydell; Anders Ansell; Mario Plos; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nuclear power plant; Earthquake; Seismic high frequencies; Fluid-structure interaction; Piping; Concrete; Pool;

    Abstract : Sweden is generally considered to be a low seismicity area, but for structures within nuclear power facilities, the safety level demand with respect to seismic events are high and thus, these structures are required to be earthquake-resistant. The seismic hazard is here primarily considered to be associated with near-field earthquakes. READ MORE
