1. Psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes : Prevalence, comorbidity and life stories
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to explore psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes.The first study investigates a) the prevalence of symptoms of psychiatric disorders, b) the prevalence of mental health problems, defined by psychological suffering and impairment>2 weeks, c) the usefulness of sport-specific instruments in indicating clinical levels of psychiatric symptoms, and d) the life history of psychiatric disorders. 2. Forage feeding in intensive lamb production : intake and performance in ewes and lambs
Abstract : Successful feeding strategies of periparturient ewes and growing lambs are essential in intensive indoor lamb production. This thesis evaluated the effects of chopping grass silage and of mixing silage with concentrate on feed intake, dietary selection, chewing behaviour, faecal particle size and performance in pregnant and lactating ewes and in suckling and finishing lambs. 3. Erythrina foliage as an alternative feed for growing goats in Lao PDR
Abstract : Foliages from some tropical plants and from different species of the legume Erythrina were examined in five studies assessing the characteristics of these foliages as feed for goats. Digestibility and feed preference studies showed that ad libitum feeding of foliage from Erythrina (Erythrina variegata), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and kapok (Ceiba pentandra) resulted in a longer time spent eating and more changes in diet selection, feed intake, crude protein (CP) digestibility and nitrogen (N) retention than foliage from jujube (Ziziphus jujube Mill), fig (Ficus racemosa) and mango (Mangifera indica). 4. Register studies of cancer in the Southern Health Care Region in Sweden
Abstract : The overall aim was to study different aspect of health care use and health care costs on a population based level for persons with cancer and their partners, and from an individual level to explore the impact of comorbidities in incidence and survival. In the beginning of the study all persons in the Southern Health Care Region in Sweden diagnosed with colon, rectal, breast, prostate and lung cancer during the period 2000 to 2005 were identified via the Swedish Cancer Register. 5. Aspects of institutional care of patients with dementia
Abstract : The aim of the present study was to investigate all long-term institutions in the county of Västerbotten, Northern Sweden, to give a detailed description of the institutionalized population with respect to motor functions, vision, hearing, speech, ADL-functions, prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and behavioral disturbances, staff work load, use of psychoactive drugs and prevalence of dementia. Another aim was to select some specific 'problem areas' in the nursing care of demented patients for further descriptive and interventional studies. READ MORE
