  1. 6. Geomorphology and environmental dynamics in Save River delta, Mozambique : A cross-timescale perspective

    Author : Elidio Massuanganhe; Lars-Ove Westerberg; Robert Marchant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Save River delta; deltaic wetlands; biogeomorphology; climate change; landscape evolution; coastal management; socio-ecological systems; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Long-term perspectives on the evolution of river deltas have provided useful knowledge capable of responding to pending questions related to the ongoing climate and environmental changes. Increasing utilization pressure on delta environments has necessitated increased attention to protect the socio-economic and ecological values. READ MORE

  2. 7. Humans and Seagrasses in East Africa : A social-ecological systems approach

    Author : Maricela de la Torre-Castro; Nils Kautsky; Carl Folke; Patrik Rönnbäck; Edward H. Allison; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : seagrasses; social-ecological systems; institutions; seaweed farming; artisanal fisheries; common-pool resources; natural resource management; Zanzibar; Tanzania; East Africa; Western Indian Ocean;

    Abstract : The present study is one of the first attempts to analyze the societal importance of seagrasses (marine flowering plants) from a Natural Resource Management perspective, using a social-ecological systems (SES) approach. The interdisciplinary study takes place in East Africa (Western Indian Ocean, WIO) and includes in-depth studies in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania. READ MORE

  3. 8. Making complex commons work : identifying critical social-ecological factors and mechanisms for sustainable ecosystem management

    Author : Caroline Schill; Therese Lindahl; Björn Vollan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agent-based modelling; Behavioural experiments; Collective action; Common-pool resources; Cooperation; Ecological complexity; Knowledge sharing; Regime shifts; Social-ecological systems; Sustainable management; Thresholds; Uncertainty; Sustainability Science; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : Collective action holds the key to many sustainability challenges, from local to global scales. Whether it is to manage community-based fisheries or take action against climate change or biodiversity loss – the question on how to overcome the conflict between individual and collective interests (i.e. READ MORE

  4. 9. Microalgae at wastewater pond treatment in cold climate : an ecological engineering approach

    Author : Erik Grönlund; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering; Environmental engineering;

    Abstract : Three types of wastewater ponds in subarctic climates were investigated, each of them highly dependent on microalgae. They were fellingsdams, i.e. READ MORE

  5. 10. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models.
