1. Network Based Tools and Indicators for Landscape Ecological Assessments, Planning, and Design
Abstract : Land use change constitutes a primary driving force in shaping social-ecological systems world wide, and its effects reach far beyond the directly impacted areas. Graph based landscape ecological tools have become established as a promising way to efficiently explore and analyze the complex, spatial systems dynamics of ecological networks in physical landscapes. 2. Biotope and biodiversity mapping in forest and urban green space : methodological review and developments
Abstract : Forests play an important role in providing ecosystem services that support the ecological integrity of an area and also supply social benefits for humans. Many of the essential ecological and social benefits derived from forest are underpinned by its biodiversity. READ MORE

3. Forest edge development : management and design of forest edges in infrastructure and urban environments
Abstract : This thesis investigates design guidelines and management systems for the development of stationary forest edges with a graded profile in infrastructure and urban environments. The spatial restriction for the edge to move forward caused by human land use counteracts the natural dynamics and development patterns of graded forest edges. READ MORE

4. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient
Abstract : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 5. Projecting Urban Natures : Investigating integrative approaches to urban development and nature conservation
Abstract : Projecting Urban Natures is a compilation thesis in critical studies in architecture. It comprises three journal articles and four design proposals in which I have taken an active part. READ MORE
