21. Exposure and effects of naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in fish : Implications for Baltic Sea wildlife
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate if naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are causing negative health effects for Baltic Sea wildlife. In the laboratory, OH-PBDEs have shown to be potent disrupters of energy metabolism as well as endocrine disruptors and neurotoxins. READ MORE

22. Endocrine modulators and sexual differentiation in Japanese quail : With emphasis on the neuroendocrine system
Abstract : Chemical disruption of the endocrine system in various animal species is currently attracting considerable interest, but avian models are not yet widely used in studying endocrine disturbances. This thesis shows the occurrence of alterations in sexual behavior and reproductive organs in adult Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) following embryonic exposure to estrogen-like chemicals. 23. Evolution and Ecology of AhR genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)
Abstract : In vertebrates, studies of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) have been of particular interest due to its direct involvement in the toxic effects exerted by several environmental pollutants, such as PCB and dioxin. After binding to the toxic molecule, this receptor initiates transcription of several genes that are part of the biotransformation battery but most notably the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, which results in an excessive release of oxidative enzymes and free radicals. 24. Microarray Analysis of mRNA Decay Assays and Prediction of Drug Target Conservation
Abstract : This thesis contains two papers concerning (I) the evolutionary conservation of drug targets and its potential use in environmental risk assessments and (II) mRNA degradation as a control mechanism during osmotic stress in the yeast S. cerevisiae. Environmental risk assessments are needed for the approval of new pharmaceutical compounds. READ MORE

25. Interaction of Xenobiotics with the Glucocorticoid Hormone System in vitro
Abstract : Persistent environmental pollutants were examined for their interaction with the glucocorticoid hormone system. The focus was placed on interference with the glucocorticoid synthesis and the glucocorticoid-signalling pathway in various in vitro test systems. READ MORE
