1. Dietary Fatty Acids, Body Composition and Ectopic Fat : Results from Overfeeding Studies in Humans
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of dietary fatty acids on body composition and ectopic fat in humans, with emphasis on the role of the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and the saturated fatty acid (SFA) palmitic acid (16:0). The overall hypothesis was that linoleic acid would be beneficial compared with palmitic acid during overfeeding, as previously indicated in animals. READ MORE

2. Effects of diet intervention on body composition and ectopic fat accumulation in obese postmenopausal women
Abstract : Background Obesity is increasing worldwide and is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. Notably, abdominal (central) obesity carries a high risk of obesity-related diseases, while peripheral fat accumulation can act in a protective manner. READ MORE

3. Lifestyle and glycaemic control before and after the onset of type 2 diabetes
Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex disease with widespread physiological insults to the regulation of metabolic homeostasis, above all glycaemic regulation. The pathogenesis of T2D and its progression is broadly understood to be through a gradual decrease in peripheral insulin sensitivity, a compensatory rise in insulin secretion, and a gradual decline in beta-cell function, resulting in glycaemic dysregulation and eventual T2D. 4. Metabolic consequences of a Paleolithic diet in obese postmenopausal women
Abstract : BackgroundObesity, in particular abdominal adiposity, is associated with elevated fatty acids and pro-inflammatory adipokines, which are linked to ectopic fat storage and insulin resistance. During menopause, there is a redistribution of fat from the peripheral to abdominal depots. READ MORE

5. Activation of the Cellular Immune Response in Drosophila melanogaster Larvae
Abstract : During the last 40 years, Drosophila melanogaster has become an invaluable tool in understanding innate immunity. The innate immune system of Drosophila consists of a humoral and a cellular component. While many details are known about the humoral immune system, our knowledge about the cellular immune system is comparatively small. READ MORE
