  1. 1. Egg carrying in the golden egg bug

    Author : Minna Miettinen; Ingrid Ahnesjö; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hemiptera; Halvvingar; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : Females of the golden egg bug, Phyllomorpha laciniata Vill (Heteroptera, Coreidae), lay their eggs on the backs of male and female conspecifics. Eggs survive poorly in nature unless being carried by living conspecifics. The most likely evolutionary explanation to egg carrying is that individuals carry their own eggs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Author : Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Abstract : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 3. 3. Avian IgY antibody : In vitro and in vivo

    Author : David Carlander; Lennart Hammarström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Antigen production; chicken; cystic fibrosis; egg; ELISA; IgY; immunotherapy; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; yolk; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) is the major antibody found in eggs from chicken (Gallus domesticus). IgY can be used as an alternative to mammalian antibodies normally used in research, and its use in immunotherapy has recently been proposed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Levels of brominated flame retardants in humans and their environment : occupational and home exposure

    Author : Marie Karlsson; Bert van Bavel; Bo Strandberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PBDE; BTBPE; DeBDethane; plasma; air; dust; Northern fulmar; egg; household; occupational exposure; Chemistry; Kemi; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Plasma from workers at an electronic dismantling plant were analysed for tri- to heptaBDEs (brominated diphenyl ethers), during 18 months. The different exposed groups showed concentrations ranging from 0.06to 2.8 ng g-1 (l. READ MORE

  5. 5. Production of polyclonal antibodies in rabbits and chickens immunised with human immunoglobulin G : A study of the utility of egg yolk antibody production as a substitute for rabbit serum antibody production

    Author : Lise Svendsen Bollen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Laboratory animals; antibody production; egg yolk; adjuvants; antibody response; avidity; Försöksdjursvetenskap; Laboratory animal science; Försöksdjursvetenskap; zoologisk utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Development;

    Abstract : The utility of chicken egg yolk antibodies as an alternative to rabbit antisera was studied by comparing antibody and avidity development in immunised animals (15 rabbits and 30 chickens) during a one-year immunisation scheme. Human IgG was used as the model antigen and the efficacy of three adjuvants, Freund's Complete Adjuvant, Freund's Incomplete Adjuvant and Hunter's TiterMax, was compared. READ MORE
