  1. 1. Magnetic resonance imaging, electroneurographic, and clinical findings in Bell's palsy

    Author : Mats Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Bell s palsy; facial nerve; magnetic resonance imaging; gadolinium; electroneurography; clinical grading; neurapraxia; nerve degeneration; prognostication; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Seventy-two patients were examined in order to learn more about the pathophysiology of Bell's palsy and to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as electroneurographic and clinical tests in predicting the outcome in patients with this disease.In 12 of 20 patients (60%) an increased signal intensity in the paranasal sinuses was evident on T2-weighted MRI scans in the early stage of palsy, and in six of the positive patients the high signal intensity had disappeared by the time of the follow-up examination. 2. 2. Studies of diaphragm fatigue and dysfunction

    Author : Peter J Radell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Diaphragm function; contractility; fatigue; oxidative metabolism; 31phosphorus nuclear magnetic spectroscopy; ultrasonography; prolonged ventilation; compound muscle action potential; myopathy; electroneurography; muscle fiber; morphology.;

    Abstract : Diaphragm fatigue and dysfunction are important components of acute and chronic respiratory pump failure. We lack knowledge about the nature of diaphragm fatigue and the pathophysiological and morphological changes that occur in the diaphragm after prolonged mechanical ventilation. This thesis studied two aspects of diaphragm function. READ MORE

  3. 3. Peripheral and central effects of nerve regeneration : Experimental and clinical studies

    Author : Thomas Hansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : A nerve injury in the hand often results in profound abnmmalities in sensory perception despite careful alignment and microsurgical repair in order to facilitate accurate nerve regeneration. The present experimental and clinical studies were undertaken in an attempt to functionally evaluate peripheral and central effects of nerve regeneration. READ MORE
