  1. 1. Molecular Interactions Studied by Electrophoretic and Diffusion NMR

    Author : Fredrik Hallberg; Peter Stilbs; István Furó; Gareth Morris; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; NMR; electrophoretic NMR; Ion pairing; complexation; association; diffusion; pulsed field gradient; Nafion; Spectroscopy; Spektroskopi;

    Abstract : Even though electrophoretic NMR (eNMR) experiments may provide unique chemical information and have been performed for three decades, the technique is still rarely applied, mainly because several experimental sources of artifacts have to be controlled to achieve accurate results. In this thesis, new experimental setups and protocols for accurate and precise eNMR experiments are presented. READ MORE

  2. 2. Charged colloids observed by electrophoretic and diffusion NMR

    Author : Erik Thyboll Pettersson; Peter Stilbs; Terence Cosgrove; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; ENMR; electrophoretic NMR; dissusion NMR; electrophoretic mobility; double stimulated echo; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : The thesis deals partly with methodology including construction of hardware and new pulse sequences in the field of electrophoretic NMR, and partly with practical use of ENMR and diffusion NMR in the investigation of charged colloidal systems. Several sources of artefacts are investigated, including gas production at the electrodes, electroosmosis and Joule heating effects that can cause convection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ions interacting with macromolecules : NMR studies in solution

    Author : Yuan Fang; Istvan Furo; Monika Schönhoff; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; electrophoretic NMR; diffusion NMR; specific ion effects; Hofmeister; ion binding; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Specific ion effects, identified for more than hundred years, play an important role in a wide range of phenomena and applications. Several mechanisms such as direct ion interaction with molecules have been suggested to explain these effects, but quantitative experimental evidence remains scarce. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterizing ions in solution by NMR methods

    Author : Marianne Giesecke; István Furó; Peter Griffiths; KTH; []
    Keywords : electrophoretic NMR; diffusion NMR; NMR imaging; ion pairing; ion association; polyethylene oxide; metal-ion complex; Li ion batteries; electrolyte characterization; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : NMR experiments performed under the effect of electric fields, either continuous or pulsed, can provide quantitative parameters related to ion association and ion transport in solution.  Electrophoretic NMR (eNMR) is based on a diffusion pulse-sequence with electric fields applied in the form of pulses. 5. 5. NMR Studies of Colloidal Systems in and out of Equilibrium

    Author : Pavel V. Yushmanov; Peter Stilbs; Terence Gosgrove; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stopped-flow NMR; temperature-jump NMR; crossrelaxation; NMR; NMR probe; fluorosurfactant; micellar kinetics; micellar structure; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The Thesis describes (i) the development of add-on instrumentation extending the capabilities of conventional NMR spectrometers and (ii) the application of the designed equipments and techniques for investigating various colloidal systems. The new equipments are: Novel designs of stopped-flow and temperature–jump inserts intended for conventional Bruker wide-bore superconductive magnets. READ MORE
