  1. 1. Theoretical and Computational Studies on the Physics of Applied Magnetism : Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy of Transition Metal Magnets and Magnetic Effects in Elastic Electron Scattering

    Author : Alexander Edström; Jan Rusz; Olle Eriksson; Patrick Bruno; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetism; Magnetic anisotropy; DFT; Permanent magnets; Electron vortex beams; Electron microscopy; Electron scattering; Multislice methods; Magnetism; magnetisk anisotropi; permanentmagneter; täthetsfunktionalteori; elektronmikroskopi; elektronvirvelstrålar; elektronspridningsteori; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two selected topics in magnetism are studied using theoretical modelling and computational methods. The first of these is the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of transition metal based magnets. In particular, ways of finding 3d transition metal based materials with large MAE are considered. READ MORE

    Abstract :       Bainitic steels have attracted great attentions in recent years due to their excellent combination of properties to accommodate a wide range of applications. A deep and comprehensive understanding of how bainite forms is required to better design the production process and optimize the properties of bainitic steels. READ MORE

  3. 3. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy

    Author : André Tomás Graça; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Johannes Messinger; Karina Persson; Werner Kühlbrandt; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Organization of Nanoparticles in Solution-A TEM Study

    Author : Olivier Balmes; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materiallära; materialteknik; Material technology; organisation; plunge freezing; TEM; nanoparticle; transmission electron microscopy;

    Abstract : A new approach to the study of nanoparticle systems has been introduced. Nanoparticle systems in aqueous and organic solutions have been synthesized and studied by transmission electron microscopy. These systems include nanoparticles of gold, silver, palladium, ruthenium, and platinum which have been stabilized using various ligands. READ MORE

  5. 5. Virtual histology by laboratory x-ray phase-contrast tomography

    Author : Jenny Romell; Hans Hertz; Anna Burvall; Julia Herzen; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biological and Biomedical Physics; Biologisk och biomedicinsk fysik;

    Abstract : Detailed imaging of biological samples is central to different fields of research, as well as for clinical pathology. Classical histology, using light- orelectron microscopy, can generate high-resolution images but is destructive and only gives two-dimensional information. READ MORE
