  1. 11. Growth and optical properties of III-V semiconductor nanowires: : Studies relevant for solar cells

    Author : Vilgaile Dagyte; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanowire; semiconductor; Photovoltaics; Epitaxy; Optoelectronics; GaAs; GaInP; Fysicumarkivet A:2018:Dagyté;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with epitaxial growth and optical properties of semiconductor nanowires with implications and insights about materials for solar cells. The chapters leading up to the papers give a broader background and an introduction to the field and include nanowires and their synthesis, semiconductor properties, solar cell operational principles, light interaction with a nanowire array, and optical characterization of such arrays. Abstract : YTTERBY, a small village very close to Stockholm where I live, is the place in the world which has lent its name to the largest number of elements in the periodic table, namely four - YTTRIUM, YTTERBIUM, ERBIUM and TERBIUM. Three more lanthanide elements were discovered from the now empty quarry located in this village. READ MORE

  3. 13. Epigenetic mechanisms and regulatory aspects of human cancer and neural progenitor cells : implications for diagnosis and therapy

    Author : Monira Akhtar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Epigenetic is defined as heritable modification or properties of the functional genome that are not directly embedded in the DNA sequence. Epigenetic changes include DNA methylation, histone modifications and RNA-mediated gene silencing. READ MORE

  4. 14. Development of AIDS associated and endemic Kaposi sarcoma : HHV-8/KSHV viral load in cutaneous and oral tumor cells

    Author : Fatemeh Pak; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Oral Kaposi s sarcoma . HHV-8 . immunohistochemistry; PCR ; lymphatic ascular endothelium;

    Abstract : Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a highly and abnormally vascularized tumor-like lesion which usually presents as a cutaneous lesion and eventually progresses to systemic disease usually in the gastrointestinal (G1) tract, lungs, oral cavity and lymph nodes. Whether KS represents a predominantly monoclonal neoplastic cell proliferation or a hyperplastic, reactive polyclonal process is still controversial. READ MORE

    Abstract : The neurovascular unit (NVU) comprises the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and its surrounding astrocytes, pericytes and neurons that are embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As the main function of the BBB is to protect the brain from inlet of pathogens and toxins, the specialized endothelial cells that keep the barrier tight will also hinder the passage of pharmaceuticals.
