1. Lipid Micro Emboli in Cardiac Surgery
Abstract : This thesis is based on five studies. It includes the characterization of lipid micro emboli in shed mediastinal blood during cardiac surgery. The reuse of blood directly by cardiotomy suction is a common practice in order to reduce the need of blood transfusions. READ MORE

2. Decompression strain during long-duration, high-altitude exposures : Effects of intermittent excursions to moderate altitude and inspired fractions of oxygen
Abstract : Today´s tactical demands and new technical solutions in fighter aircraft entail longer exposure periods at higher altitudes than before. A low cabin pressure protects pilots from pulmonary barotrauma in case of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, however it can also generate a supersaturation of nitrogen (N2) in the tissues, increasing the risks of bubble formation and decompression sickness (DCS). 3. Aspects of retransfusion of shed blood in cardiac surgery
Abstract : The use of cardiotomy suction during open heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has a long tradition and often regarded as mandatory. Recently, studies have described potentially negative effects of cardiotomy suction with activation of the complement system, enhanced inflammatory response, hemolysis and coagulopathy. READ MORE

4. "A syndrome so characteristic" Molecular and clinical studies of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Lemierre's syndrome
Abstract : Lemierre’s syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and involves tonsillitis, jugular vein thrombophlebitis and septic pulmonary emboli. The first studies underlying this thesis focused on bacterial interaction with coagulation. READ MORE

5. New Intraoperative Techniques to Improve Advanced Aortic Root Surgery
Abstract : Study I: Thirteen patients underwent a modified Ross operation in which the free-standing pulmonary autograft was supported externally by a Dacron vascular prosthetic jacket (DVPJ). The tailor-made DVPJ prevented dilatation of the neo-aortic root significantly following a median follow-up of 47 months compared to a cohort of l3 matched patients undergoing conventional Ross operation.
