  1. 1. Transcriptional and epigenetic control of gene expression in embryo development

    Author : Ann Boija; Mattias Mannervik; Jerry L. Workman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Epigenetics; Cell specification; Drosophila embryo; Dorsal morphogen; CBP p300; Gene regulation; Chromatin; Promoter proximal Pol II pausing; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : During cell specification, temporal and spatially restricted gene expression programs are set up, forming different cell types and ultimately a multicellular organism. In this thesis, we have studied the molecular mechanisms by which sequence specific transcription factors and coactivators regulate RNA polymerase II (Pol II) transcription to establish specific gene expression programs and what epigenetic patterns that follows. 2. 2. Fetal Outcome in Experimental Diabetic Pregnancy

    Author : Sheller Zabihi; Ulf Eriksson; Michael Welsh; Elisabeth (Lisa) Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Rat; Mouse; TG; KO; Diabetes in Pregnancy; Embryo; Folic acid; Superoxide dismutase; Catalase; Glutathione peroxidase; Vascular endothelial growth factor-A; Folate binding protein-1; Bax; Bcl-2; Caspase-3; P53; Pax-3; Blood flow; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Women with pregestational diabetes have a 2-5 fold increased risk of giving birth to malformed babies compared with non-diabetic women. Diabetes-induced oxidative stress in maternal and embryonic tissues has been implicated in the teratogenic process. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on in vitro fertilised human preembryos. Morphological and chromosomal aspects

    Author : Thorir Hardarson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : IVF; oocyte; embryo; blastocyst; human; FISH; aneuploidy;

    Abstract : The success rate of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) has gradually increased due to basic research in preembryonic biology and the introduction of new methods, both technical and medical. However, further research is needed to establish which preembryos are developmentally most competent in order to be able to maintain the pregnancy rate while only a single preembryo is being transferred. 4. 4. Improved environmental monitoring and assessment : Establishing links between effects of chemical pollution at different levels of biological organization in a Baltic Sea bioindicator species (Monoporeia affinis)

    Author : Martin Reutgard; Magnus Breitholtz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental health assessment; environmental monitoring; chemical pollution; hypoxia; bioindicators; biomarkers; teratogenicity; embryo toxicity; oxidative stress; acetylcholine esterase. Monoporeia affinis; Baltic Sea; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : A large number of chemicals enters the marine environment via atmospheric deposition, run-off, rivers and streams, industrial effluents and municipal wastewater. To understand how chemicals affect environmental health, monitoring and assessment approaches need to combine physical, chemical and biological effect parameters from different levels of biological organization. 5. 5. Biomarkers and bioindicators of hypoxia and sediment toxicity in Monoporeia affinis

    Author : Marie Löf; Brita Sundelin; Tina Elfwing; Elena Gorokhova; Ingela Dahllöf; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biomarkers; Bioindicators; Embryo aberrations; Hypoxia; Contaminated sediment; PAHs; PCBs; Metals; Baltic Sea; Amphipods; Monoporeia affinis; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Two of the most pressing environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are pollution and oxygen deficiency. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate a set of biomarkers and reproductive variables in the amphipod Monoporeia affinis to test their suitability as indicators of exposure to contaminants and hypoxia.
