  1. 11. Molecular studies of complications in end stage renal disease : focus on expression and variations of candidate susceptibility genes

    Author : Alicia Bergsten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a complex multifactorial disorder, where both environmental and genetic factors are contributing to the phenotype. The most common complications seen in ESRD patients are malnutrition, inflammation and atherosclerosis and the coexistence of these complications is denoted the MIA syndrome, which is associated with inexplicably high mortality. 3. 13. Effects of gastric bypass surgery in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Vasileios Liakopoulos; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Background: The effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GBP) have not been adequately explored in patients with concurrent obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to the same extent as has occurred for individuals with obesity alone. The overall aim of this thesis is to thoroughly examine the effects of GBP surgery in patients with obesity and T2DM in terms of cardiovascular disease and mortality, changes in various comorbidities, risk factors, and renal function as well as reporting adverse events. 4. 14. Membranous Nephropathy - Challenges in diagnostics and treatment

    Author : Jennie Lönnbro-Widgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glomerulonephritis; Membranous nephropathy; Proteinuria; Phospholipase A2 receptor; Cancer; End-stage renal disease;

    Abstract : The variability in the pathogenesis, clinical presentation and outcome of membranous nephropathy (MN) poses major clinical challenges and raises different questions, both regarding diagnostics and treatment of patients with MN. The aims of this thesis were therefore to examine: 1) differences in the glomerular expression of different IgG subclasses and phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) between patients with idiopathic and malignancy-associated MN; 2) treatment pattern of patients with idiopathic MN; and 3) if the serum PLA2R antibody level at diagnosis can be used as a prognostic marker.
