1. Process Utility Performance Evaluation and Enhancements in the Traditional Sugar Cane Industry
Abstract : The need to achieve sustainable development has led to devising various approaches for the efficient utilization of natural resources. Renewable energy technology and energy efficiency measures feature prominently in this regard, and in particular for industries such as sugar production: the sugar cane industry’s eponymous feedstock is a renewable resource, and mills have potential for increased energy savings via improvements to cogeneration units, electric drive retrofitting, and other measures. 2. Forest based biorefinery supply chains - Identification and evaluation of economic, CO2, and resource efficiency
Abstract : Biorefineries for production of fuels, chemicals, or materials, can bean important contribution to reach a fossil-free economy. Large-scaleforest-based biorefineries are not yet cost competitive with their fossil counterparts and it is important to identify biorefinery supply chain configurations with good economic, CO2, and biomass performance if biorefineries are to be a viable alternative to the fossil refineries. 3. Evolution and control of the three dimensional functional microstructure of Polymer:Fullerene photovoltaic blends
Abstract : Polymer:fullerene bulk-heterojunction thin films show great promise for use as active layers in organic solar cells. However, their low thermal stability is a hindrance that complicates the manufacturing and influences the lifetime of devices. READ MORE

4. Studies of triggering and exotic particle searches at ATLAS, and a search for trapped monopoles
Abstract : The ATLAS detector at the LHC operated through 2011 and 2012 with 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy of its colliding proton bunches, respectively. One if its main objectives is to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. READ MORE

5. Development of Cermet Microstructures during Sintering and Heat-Treatment
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the microstructure of Ti(C, N) based cermet materials used in cutting tool applications. Several techniques have been used to study the microstructure of cermets, in particular transmission electron micro-scopy in combi-na-tion with energy dispersive X-ray analysis and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, energy-filtered transmission electron micro-scopy, atom-probe field-ion microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
