Abstract : This dissertation explores how characters who embody outsiderness and/or otherness intersect with and connote queerness—such as, for instance, homoeroticism and nonconformism—in the novels Peter Camenzind (1904) and Der Steppenwolf (1927) by German-language author Hermann Hesse (1877–1962).In most of Hesse’s novels, the narrative revolves around a male protagonist who is characterized as an outsider. Abstract : This study deals with variation between possessive/genitive and objective/plain forms of the subject of the verbal gerund clause (VGC) in Present-day and Late Modern British English, as in Would you object to my [me] paying her a visit? and Poor timing of spoonfuls can lead to the child’s [the child] feeling frustrated. Abstract : This dissertation argues that the many narrative repetitions and allusions in Thackeray's fiction can be read as comments on and interpretations of each other and of biblical texts. Especially Henry Esmond, The Virginians, and Philip make use of reiterative strategies that have a close affinity with both midrash, classical Jewish narrative exegesis, and Christian typology. 4. "The Relative Merits of Goodness and Originality" : The Ethics of Storytelling in Peter Carey’s Novels
Abstract : The aim of this study is to demonstrate that recurrent formal and thematic patterns in Peter Carey’s novels suggest an interrelation between the works, and that an analysis which takes that interrelation into account can extract an argument concerning the ethics of storytelling from the texts. The issue of the status of fictional discourse receives prominent and complex consideration in Carey’s novels, and this study argues that Carey presents storytelling as an intentional mode of social interaction, defined and governed by extra-linguistic conventions. 5. Envisioning American women : The roads to communal identity in novels by women of color
Abstract : This study explores the representation of female identity formation in ten novels, published between the late 1960s and the late 1980s, by American women of color Paula Gunn Allen, Sandra Cisneros, Maxine Hong Kingston, Paule Marshall, Louise Meriwether, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Sarah Wright. The motivation for such a selection is based on the novels' shared formal and thematic characteristics, as well as on political affinities in the emphasis on the forces marginalizing their non-white female protagonists.
