1. Agency and Artefacts : A cognitive semiotic exploration of design
Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of artefacts in relation to human agency and design within a cognitive semiotics framework. It deals with questions such as What is agency? What are artefacts and how does agency relate to them? What kind of intentions are involved in the activity of designing? What is human-specific with respect to agency and design? How can the origins and evolution of design be explained? Addressing these questions, the thesis proposes a layered model of agency for explaining the relations between different grades of agentive complexity. READ MORE

2. Removal of natural organic matter by enhanced coagulation in Nicaragua
Abstract : The existence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in a drinking water plant of Nicaragua has been investigated in order to see whether the concentration exceeded the maximum contaminant level recommended by the environmental protection agency of the United States (USEPA) and the Nicaragua guidelines. The influence of pH, temperature, chlorine dose and contact time on the formation of THMs were studied. READ MORE

5. Methods for improving covariate balance in observational studies
Abstract : This thesis contributes to the field of causal inference, where the main interest is to estimate the effect of a treatment on some outcome. At its core, causal inference is an exercise in controlling for imbalance (differences) in covariate distributions between the treated and the controls, as such imbalances otherwise can bias estimates of causal effects.
