  1. 1. Effects of antipsychotics on GABA neurons in the basal ganglia of the rat

    Author : Jiang Yu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; antipsychotics; γ-aminobutyric acid; glutamic acid decarboxylase; basal ganglia; entopeduncular nucleus; vacuous chewing movements; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Psychiatry; psykiatri;

    Abstract : Antipsychotics are used in the treatment of psychosis and, based on their propensities to induce extrapyramidal side effects (EPS), are divided into typical (haloperidol) and atypical (clozapine) subtypes. The incidence of EPS, arises from an imbalance in the neurotransmission between two majorGABAergic pathways of the basal ganglia that connect the striatum directly to the entopeduncular nucleus (EP) and the substantia nigra reticulata or indirectly via the globus pallidus and the subthalamic nucleus. 2. 2. Presynaptic mechanisms in L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia

    Author : Hanna Lindgren; Basala gangliernas patofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiogenesis; dyskinesia; 5-HT; DA; Parkinson s disease; 6-OHDA; microdialysis;

    Abstract : This study has investigated the impact of presynaptic factors on the development of dyskinesia during chronic L-DOPA treatment in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The mechanisms causing dyskinesia are not completely understood but have been proposed to involve changes in gene and protein expression in striatal neurons, which are the main target of dopamine (DA) projections from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). 3. 3. Striatal adenosine A2A receptors

    Author : Per Svenningsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : caffeine; adenosine; A2A receptors; dopamine receptors; striatum; basal ganglia; immediate early genes; c-fos; NGFI-A; DARPP-32; in situ hybridization;

    Abstract : The nucleoside adenosine exerts a modulatory action in the central nervous system by activating G-protein coupled receptors. Four such receptors are cloned and pharmacologically characterized: A1, A2A, A2B and A3. Caffeine, the most widely consumed psychostimulant, acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist predominantly on the first two. READ MORE

  4. 4. Subsystems of the basal ganglia and motor infrastructure

    Author : Iman Kamali Sarvestani; Örjan Ekeberg; Jeanette Hällgren-Kotaleski; Christelle Baunez; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Basal Ganglia; Action Selection; Motor Learning; Tectum; Superior Colliculus; Mesencephalic Locomotor Region; Reticulospinal Neurons; Computational Models;

    Abstract : The motor nervous system is one of the main systems of the body and is our principle means ofbehavior. Some of the most debilitating and wide spread disorders are motor systempathologies. In particular the basal ganglia are complex networks of the brain that control someaspects of movement in all vertebrates. READ MORE
