21. Road Ecology for Environmental Assessment
Abstract : Transport infrastructure is closely linked to several politically relevant sustainability issues, and since 1985 a formalized environmental assessment process is linked to planning and construction of new roads and railways in the EU (EU directives 85/337/EEC and 2001/42). The aim of the environmental assessment process is to think in advance; to identify, predict and evaluate significant environmental changes resulting from a proposed activity, in order to adjust the proposed activity accordingly and to avoid unnecessary and unexpected consequences. 22. Livestock, feed production and land use – an environmental assessment
Abstract : The use of land for agriculture contributes substantially to today’s global environmental challenges such as climate change, water and land degradation and biodiversity loss. Today, about 38% of the ice-free land surface on earth is used as agricultural land, with about 75% of agricultural land used to produce feed for livestock. READ MORE

23. Genetic Aspects of Environmental Disturbances in Marine Ecosystems : Studies of the Blue Mussel in the Baltic Sea
Abstract : Anthropogenic environmental changes can serve as drivers for evolutionary responses in wild populations. To predict the long-term impact of anthropogenic changes on populations, it is crucial to understand the genetic effects caused by these disturbances. READ MORE

24. Stochastic analysis of fluid flow and tracer pathways in crystalline fracture networks
Abstract : Understanding groundwater flow systems and how these control transport is an essential part in assessing the suitability of subsurface environments as hosts for storage of toxic waste. Therefore it is important to be able to integrate knowledge obtained from field characterisation of the subsurface with methods which can be used to evaluate and predict possible impact on surrounding environments.
