  1. 1. Materials Design from ab initio Calculations

    Author : Sa Li; Börje Johansson; Rajeev Ahuja; Gilles Hug; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; DFT; MAX; Optics; phase transition; phonon; EOS; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a theoretical study of bulk materials using ab initio methods based on the density functional theory (DFT).Crystallographic structural phase transformations and phase stability for 5f-dioxides, ABO3 perovskites, and ABO4 compounds have been extensively studied. 2. 2. Cytokine-regulated eosinophil migration in inflammatory disorders : Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Maria Lampinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Eosinophil; cytokine; migration; inflammation; asthma; allergy; inflammatory bowel disease; ulcerative colitis; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : The accumulation of eosinophil granulocytes (EOS) at sites of inflammation is a common feature of astma, allergic rhinitis and inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of the present investigation was to study the mechanisms involved in this accumulation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Spinal mobility, muscle strength and function in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Different aspects on long term outcome

    Author : Karin Romberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; idiopathic scoliosis; long-term outcome; spinal mobility; trunk muscle endurance; back function; thoracic mobility; pulmonary function; validity;

    Abstract : Introduction: The long-term physical function outcome in patients treated for idiopathic scoliosis (IS) during childhood and adolescence has not been fully explored. In addition, there is a lack of studies where different methods to measure pulmonary function are validated in patients with early onset scoliosis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Remote sensing phenology at European northern latitudes - From ground spectral towers to satellites

    Author : Hongxiao Jin; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Remote sensing; climate sensitivity.; calibration; ground spectral tower; Plant phenology index PPI ; northern latitude;

    Abstract : Plant phenology exerts major influences on carbon, water, and energy exchanges between atmosphere and ecosystems, provides feedbacks to climate, and affects ecosystem functioning and services. Great efforts have been spent in studying plant phenology over the past decades, but there are still large uncertainties and disputations in phenology estimation, trends, and its climate sensitivities. 5. 5. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain

    Author : Muhammad Zubair Hussain; Georgy Bakalkin; Anita Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endogenous Opioid System; Dynorphins; Lateralization; Alcohol Dependence; Emotions; Traumatic Brain Injury; Anterior Cingulate Cortex; Dorsal Striatum; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation.The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of  positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain.
