  1. 21. Agnostic studies in epidemiology

    Author : Torsten Dahlén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In epidemiology there has been an consistent effort to construct refined methods aiming towards the ability to draw casual inference between an exposure and an outcome. This thesis, partly inspired by the genome-wide association studies, has on the contrary strived towards exploration of data. READ MORE

  2. 22. CLEFT LIP AND PALATE IN ADOLESCENCE IDENTIFYING VARIABLES RELATING TO PSYCHOSOCIAL CONCERNS

    Author : Martin Persson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; self-concept; introversion; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; traumatologi; ortopedi; Kirurgi; Psychiatry; psychosocial; cleft lip palate; clinical psychology; psychosomatics; Psykiatri; klinisk psykologi; psykosomatik; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; Psykologi; Psychology; epidemiologi; psychology; academic achievement; muscle strength; intellectual capacity; weight; statue;

    Abstract : In study I, 55 adolescents with cleft lip and palate and 31 adolescents without cleft filled out two questionnaires: the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale to assess self-concept, and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Inventory to assess the degree of introversion. In studies II & III, data regarding physical characteristic and general intellectual capacity were obtained from the Swedish National Service Enrolment Register for the years 1991-97. READ MORE

  3. 23. Novel risk factors for atrial fibrillation in an urban population

    Author : Samuel Adamsson Eryd; Kardiovaskulär forskning - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ceruloplasmin; atrial fibrillation; epidemiology; genetic polymorphisms; intima-media thickness; plasma proteins; red blood cell distribution width; risk factors;

    Abstract : Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Low-grade inflammation, erythrocyte volume variation, and subclinical atherosclerosis have repeatedly been associated with cardiovascular disease, but it remains unclear whether these risk factors are also associated with incident AF. 4. 24. Population-based prediction of atrial fibrillation

    Author : Gustav Smith; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; prediction; epidemiology; genetics; natriuretic peptide; heart failure;

    Abstract : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and increases in prevalence. As AF confers increased risk of morbidity, stroke, dementia and mortality, a major objective of cardiovascular epidemiology today is the development of tools for prediction and prevention of AF and its consequences. 5. 25. THE VASOPRESSIN SYSTEM IN DIABETES MELLITUS, OBESITY AND THE METABOLIC SYNDROME

    Author : Sofia Enhörning; Kardiovaskulär forskning - hypertoni; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; arginine vasopressin; copeptin; prediction; epidemiology; diabetes mellitus; risk factors; abdominal obesity; obesity; metabolic syndrome; microalbuminuria; AVPR1A; AVPR1B;

    Abstract : Background: Animal studies suggest that the arginine vasopressin (AVP) system plays a role in glucose and fat metabolism, but data from humans are limited. Method and results: We analysed plasma copeptin (copeptin), a stable C-terminal fragment of the AVP pro-hormone in the large, Swedish, population-based cohort Malmö Diet and Cancer Study Cardiovascular Cohort (MDC-CC, n=6103).
