  1. 16. Health effects of air pollution in Iceland : respiratory health in volcanic environments

    Author : Hanne Krage Carlsen; Anna Oudin; Thorarinn Gislason; Kadri Meister; Bertil Forsberg; Gunilla Wieslander; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory health; air pollution; volcanic ash; epidemiology; hydrogen sulfide.; Epidemiology; epidemiologi; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : Air pollution has adverse effects on human health. The respiratory system is the most exposed and short-term changes in air pollution levels have been associated with worsening of asthma symptoms and increased rates of heart attacks and stroke. Air pollution in cities due to traffic is the major concern, as many people are exposed. READ MORE

  2. 17. Smokeless Tobacco (Snus) and Cardiovascular Disease : Associations with Heart Failure and Prognosis after Myocardial Infarction

    Abstract : Previous investigations of snus use (oral moist snuff, a Swedish form of smokeless tobacco) and cardiovascular disease have generally focused on atherosclerotic events such as myocardial infarction and stroke, likely because smoking is such a well-established risk factor for atherosclerotic disease. Smokeless administration of tobacco circumvents most of the atherogenic effects of the combusted products from smoked tobacco, but it is possible that the potent autonomic and hemodynamic effects of snus and nicotine per se are detrimental for cardiovascular tissues. Abstract : This thesis is based on studies in Butajira district in the south central part of Ethiopia and one study in the Ethio-Swedish Children's Hospital in Addis Ababa. The Butajira project has a continuous demographic surveillance system, established in 1987 in a sample of 10 communities with a total baseline population of about 30,000. READ MORE

  4. 19. Chronic pain : epidemiological studies in a general population

    Abstract : The aim was to study the epidemiology of chronic pain (> 3 months duration) and factors associated to pain prevalence, prognosis, health care and medication in a general population. A cross-sectional mailed survey to a random population sample (n = 1806) was followed by a clinical examination and a prospective study of three selected groups. READ MORE

    Author : Marcel Ballin; Peter Nordström; Johan Niklasson; Maria Hagströmer; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a substantial public health burden and is the leading cause of mortality in older adults. With the population aging rapidly, interventions aimed at improving modifiable risk factors for CVD, such as physical inactivity and visceral obesity, could play an important role in reducing its burden, provided they are proven effective.
