  1. 36. Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Ketogenic Diet on Quality of Life and Changes in EEG and Sleep

    Author : Tove Hallböök; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vagus nerve stimulation; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; behaviour; attention; ketogenic diet; delta power; slow wave sleep; REM; mood; sleep; quality of life; EEG; seizure frequency; spike detection; children; neurofysiologi; Pediatri; epilepsy; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : When anti-epileptic drugs fail, and epilepsy surgery is found unfeasible or ineffective, there remains a group of at least 25% of children with epilepsy in whom seizure control cannot be achieved. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an adjunctive treatment for medically refractory epilepsy. READ MORE

  2. 37. Gene Therapy for Neurological Disorders

    Author : Jan Tönnesen; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epileptiform activity; striatum; organotypic culture; electrophysiology; Wnt5a; synaptic connectivity.; cell transplantation; hippocampus; neural stem cells; epilepsy; functional integration; Parkinson’s disease; optogenetics; Gene therapy;

    Abstract : Gene therapy is an attractive strategy for neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy, for several reasons. Introduction of genes with a therapeutic potential can be achieved locally, by accurate injections in the compromised tissue, and release of a transgene therapeutic substance can be regulated by the surrounding host neural circuitry. 3. 38. Antecedents of Cerebral Palsy in children born at term - according to subtype, motor severity and accompanying impairments

    Author : Kristina Ahlin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cerebral Pares; Risk factors; Epilepsy; Cognitive impairment; Spastic hemiplegia; Spastic diplegia; Spastic tetraplegia; Dyskinetic CP; Motor impairment; Accompanying impairments; Antecedents;

    Abstract : Aims: To explore antecedents of cerebral palsy (CP) according to subtype, severity of motor impairment and accompanying impairments (epilepsy and/or cognitive impairments) in relation to neuroimaging patterns. Material and methods: Case control studies were performed in a population-based serie of children with CP born at term (n=309), matched with a control group (n=618). READ MORE

  4. 39. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus

    Author : Christine Ekdahl Clementson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; minocycline; lipopolysaccharide; microglia activation; status epilepticus; epilepsy; cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases; apoptosis; neurogenesis; progenitor cell progeny;

    Abstract : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 5. 40. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    Author : Katherine Jakubs; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Abstract : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. READ MORE
