  1. 11. Genetics of equine insect bite hypersensitivity and genetic diversity in horses

    Author : Merina Shrestha; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Genetic variation contributing to the phenotypic variation was utilized in this thesis to understand the genetic background of a complex trait IBH, and to understand genetic diversity and relationships between various horse populations. IBH is the most common skin allergic disorder in horses, caused by bites of midges, predominantly Culicoides species. READ MORE

  2. 12. Chondrocyte and extracellular matrix alterations in equine cartilage during development and inflammation

    Author : Maria Löfgren; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease involving inflammation and subsequent degeneration of joint tissues. The disease progresses with time-dependent stages of degeneration, loss and remodelling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage, and phenotypical changes in the chondrocytes. 3. 13. From field to genetics : anthelmintic resistance in the equine roundworm Parascaris univalens

    Author : Frida Martin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The equine roundworm Parascaris univalens is a common parasite of foals. Most foals show mild clinical symptoms, but large worm burdens can lead to severe colic and even death. Regular treatment with anthelmintic drugs has resulted in resistance development, mainly to ivermectin but also to pyrantel and fenbendazole in sporadic cases. READ MORE

  4. 14. Evaluation of vertical movement asymmetries in riding horses: relevance to equine orthopaedics

    Author : Emma Persson-Sjödin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Disorders of the locomotor apparatus are very common in sports horses. Pain and dysfunction associated with these conditions have a negative impact on horse welfare. The main component in lameness evaluation is detection of vertical movement asymmetries but the inter-rater agreement among veterinarians is low. READ MORE

  5. 15. Prevention and control of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in equine hospitals in Sweden

    Author : Karin Bergström; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was first described in 1961 and has since caused nosocomial infections and therapeutic limitations. In Sweden, the first finding of horses infected with MRSA was in 2008. Nosocomial spread of MRSA among horses is a hazard for the patients and those in contact with the animals. READ MORE
