1. Intergenerational Persistence and Ethnic Disparities in Education
Abstract : This thesis consists of four self-contained essays in the sociology of educational stratification. Study I draws on newly collected survey data to assess the biases that arise in estimating socioeconomic differences in achievement when relying on parent and student reported data on social background. 2. Rapid measurements of the moisture content in biofuel
Abstract : An increasing number of power plants in Scandinavia are beginning to use biofuel instead of coal or oil. The material in the new fuel is a mixture of woodchips, mostly Pine, Spruce and Salix, bark, GROT (tops and branches from felling waste) and sawdust from sawmills. It is heterogeneous, having a moisture content varying from 15% up to 65%. READ MORE

3. Measurement and Application of Multidirectional Mobilities
Abstract : The direct measurement of moment mobility, employing a twin exciter technique, is theoretically and experimentally examined. This is continued by a theoretical and experimental analysis of an improved technique using source signal filtering, for two degrees of freedom, for the measurement of multidirectional mobilities. 4. Inductive measurement of narrow gaps for high precision welding of square butt joints
Abstract : A recent method in aero engine production is to fabricate components from smaller pieces, rather than machining them from large castings. This has made laser beam welding popular, offering high precision with low heat input and distortion, but also high productivity. READ MORE

5. Multivariate Aspects of Phylogenetic Comparative Methods
Abstract : his thesis concerns multivariate phylogenetic comparative methods. We investigate two aspects of them. The first is the bias caused by measurement error in regression studies of comparative data. We calculate the formula for the bias and show how to correct for it. READ MORE
