  1. 6. The role of estrogen receptor alpha in the regulation of bone and growth plate cartilage

    Author : Anna E Börjesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; estrogen receptor α; bone; growth plate; estrogen;

    Abstract : Estrogens are important endocrine regulators of skeletal growth and maintenance in both females and males. Studies have demonstrated that the estrogen receptor (ER)-α is the main mediator of these estrogenic effects in bone. Therefore, estrogen signaling via ERα is a target both for affecting longitudinal bone growth and for bone remodeling. READ MORE

  2. 7. Estrogen and raloxifene in experimental arthritis and osteoporosis

    Author : Caroline Jochems; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : rheumatoid arthritis; osteoporosis; estrogen; raloxifene; mice;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT In postmenopausal rheumatoid arthritis (RA), both the estrogen deficiency and the inflammatory disease contribute to the development of generalized osteoporosis. This leads to an increased risk of fracture, with high morbidity and mortality. More than 50% of women with postmenopausal RA suffer from osteoporosis. READ MORE

  3. 8. Muscles, Estrogen, and Bone

    Abstract : Sweden has one of the highest incidences of osteoporotic fractures in the world. A more sedentary lifestyle is one of several proposed reasons for the increase in osteoporosis seen in the developed countries. READ MORE

  4. 9. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

    Author : Kenny A. Rodriguez-Macias Wallberg; Tord Naessén; Lars-Åke Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause. 5. 10. Identification and characterization of new mechanisms in cardiovascular estrogen signaling

    Author : Anders Holm; Kärlfysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; endothelial cells; vascular smooth muscle cells; estrogen; GPR30 GPER1; inflammation; calcium; neovascularization; microtubule;

    Abstract : Women before menopause are protected from cardiovascular disease compared to age-matched men through mechanisms associated with the female sex hormone estrogen. There are three known estrogen receptors named ERα, ERβ and GPR30/GPER1, which are all three receptors are expressed in the cardiovascular system. READ MORE
