  1. 1. An Engineering Approach to Fire Fighting Tactics

    Author : Stefan Särdqvist; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; risk management; decision making; fire brigade; fire-fighting tactics; pre-fire planning; fire safety engineering;

    Abstract : This report presents a quantified model as a guide for the Incident Commander to determine the most suitable fire-fighting tactics in advance for given conditions at specific objects. The model is applied to two chemical warehouses. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fire safety design of road tunnels

    Author : Jonatan Gehandler; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Brandsäkerhet; vägtunnlar; design; Riskbedömning; Road tunnel fire safety; Fire safety engineering; design framework; risk evaluation;

    Abstract : This thesis can be described as a journey in performance-based fire safety design. Along the way questions such as what fire safety is, how it can be measured, whether we are posing the right questions, or engineer the best solutions, have arisen. READ MORE

  3. 3. Decision Analysis in Fire Safety Engineering - Analysing Investments in Fire Safety

    Author : Henrik Tehler; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Safety technology; Byggnadsteknik; Building construction; investment appraisal; epistemic uncertainties; fire safety; Decision analysis; risk analysis; Säkerhetsteknik;

    Abstract : The application of decision analytical methods to the evaluation of investments in fire safety was investigated, particularly with the aim of being able to suggest a method for analysing a specific investment in fire safety for a specific factory. Attention was directed above all at the handling of cases of large epistemic uncertainty regarding both probabilities and utilities, Bayesian decision theory serving as a basis for the development of the method. 4. 4. Assessment and Evaluation of Man-portable Robots for High-Risk Professions in Urban Settings

    Author : Carl Lundberg; Henrik Christensen; Stefan Axberg; Paolo Fiorini; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; robot; evaluation; military; urban; man-portable; UGV; Other technology; Övriga teknikvetenskaper;

    Abstract : There are a number of professions in which exposure to life threatening risks is part of daily routine and robots could possibly be used to avoid some of these. In fact, there are applications in which this is already done, the most prominent being bomb disposal and mine clearing. READ MORE

  5. 5. Economic evaluation, value of life, stated preference methodology and determinants of risks

    Author : Björn Sund; Lars Hultkrantz; Ulf Persson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cost-benefit analysis; value of a statistical life; contingent valuation; cardiac arrest; defibrillation; calibration; sensitivity to scope; risk communication; response times; incident experience; risk perception.; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Economics; Nationalekonomi; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : The first paper examines the value of a statistical life (VSL) for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) victims. We found VSL values to be higher for OHCA victims than for people who die in road traffic accidents and a lower-bound estimate of VSL for OHCA would be in the range of 20 to 30 million Swedish crowns (SEK).
