  1. 1. Antibiotic-induced Bacterial Toxin Release – Inhibition by Protein Synthesis Inhibitors

    Author : Gunilla Hjerdt-Goscinski; Jan Sjölin; Monica Lundholm; Inga Odenholt; Ingrid Nilsson-Ehle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; Endotoxin; LPS; exotoxin; SpeA; penicillin-binding protein; aminoglycosides; clindamycin; β-lactam antibiotics; severe sepsis; septic shock; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Toxic products, such as endotoxin from the gram-negative and exotoxin from the gram-positive bacteria, are the most important initiators of the inflammatory host response in sepsis. In addition to antibacterial treatment, numerous attempts have been made to interfere with the exaggerated proinflammatory cascade initiated by the toxins. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Round Window Membrane - Gateway to the Cochlea : A Morphological and Electrophysiological study

    Author : Leif Nordang; Sten Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Otorhinolaryngology; round window membrane; pseudomonas exotoxin; auditory brainstem response; hearing loss; endolymphatic sac; inner ear immunology; glutamate; nitric oxide inhibitor; glucocorticoid.; Otorhinolaryngologi; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorhinolaryngologi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Topical treatment of several inner ear diseases through the round window membrane (RWM) might be feasible in the near future. Bacteria toxins, ototoxic drugs and noise trauma seem to harm the inner ear by a common pathway which involves, excessive outflow of the afferent neurotransmitter glutamate and formation of nitric oxide (NO), which can severely damage cells/nerve endings and lead to cell death. 3. 3. Tumor targeted delivery of cytotoxic payloads using affibody molecules and ABD-derived affinity proteins

    Author : Hao Liu; Torbjörn Gräslund; Stefan Ståhl; Nick Devoogdt; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Targeted tumor therapy; immunotoxins; ADCs; affibody molecule; ADAPT; pseudomonas exotoxin A; maytansinoid; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Cancer treatment cost billions of dollars every year, but the mortality rate is still high. An ideal treatment is the so-called “magic bullets” that recognize and kill tumor cells while leaving normal cells untouched. READ MORE

  4. 4. Time-related Aspects of Otoprotection : Experimental Studies in Rat

    Author : Adnan Lidian; Matti Anniko; Petri Olivius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : sensorineural hearing loss; Edaravone; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; auditory brainstem response; Sprague-Dawley rat; distortion product otoacoustic emission; Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A.; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; Oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Intratympanic injection of various otoprotectants through the round window membrane (RWM) might become available in the near future as an alternative to the currently available medical and surgical methods used to treat several inner ear diseases. The most common outcome of such diseases is sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). READ MORE

  5. 5. Cellular mechanisms of interaction between uropathogenic Escherichia coli and renal epithelial cells

    Author : Åsa Laestadius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Urinary tract infections will often, particularly in children, lead to renal scar formation or hypoplastic small kidneys post-infectiously. The most common causative agent is uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli). READ MORE
