  1. 11. Dynamics and Mechanisms of Adaptive Evolution in Bacteria

    Author : Song Sun; Dan Andersson; Diarmaid Hughes; Josep Casadesús; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptive evolution; mutation; genome rearrangements; antibiotic resistance; gene amplification; genome reduction; directed evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Determining the properties of mutations is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms of adaptive evolution. The major goal of this thesis is to investigate the mechanisms of bacterial adaptation to new environments using experimental evolution. READ MORE

  2. 12. Plant Major Intrinsic Proteins - natural variation and evolution

    Author : Jonas Danielson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MIP; aquaporin; plant; natural variation; evolution; Arabidopsis; Physcomitrella patens; NIP; XIP;

    Abstract : Major Intrinsic Proteins (MIPs, also called Aquaporins, AQPs) are channel forming membrane proteins. Although initially functionally characterized and named after their water channeling property in human red blood cells, it has become increasingly evident that MIPs are present in all types of organisms and transport a variety of small, uncharged molecules besides water. 3. 13. Pollinator-mediated selection and the evolution of floral traits in orchids

    Author : Judith Trunschke; Jon Ågren; Nina Sletvold; Allan G. Ellis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Among-population variation; Ecotype; Field experiment; Floral evolution; Germination; Local adaptation; Orchidaceae; Platanthera bifolia; Phenotypic selection; Pollination; Reciprocal transplant; Trait manipulation; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined manipulations of traits and pollination environment with analysis of phenotypic selection to examine causes of variation in strength and mode of selection on floral traits, and I conducted a reciprocal sowing experiment to test for local adaptation in germination success. I tested the following predictions (1) the opportunity for selection, and the strength of pollinator-mediated and net selection increase with increasing pollen limitation, (2) the effects of traits affecting pollinator attraction and traits affecting pollination efficiency are non-additive and this leads to pollinator-mediated correlational selection, (3) the effects of spur length on pollen removal, pollen receipt, and female fitness differ between populations with short-tongued and populations with long-tongued pollinators, and (4) local adaptation at the stage of germination contributes to the maintenance of ecotypes growing in grasslands and woodlands, respectively. 4. 14. Evolution of Interactions Involving Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

    Author : Emma Åberg; Per Jemth; Madan Babu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; intrinsically disordered proteins; protein evolution; phylogenetics; ancestral sequence reconstruction; biophysical characterization; NCBD; CID; p53; MDM2; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the evolution of intrinsically disordered proteins and their interaction partners. The work presented is a combination of phylogenetic analysis, ancestral reconstruction and biophysical characterization in order to examine the evolutionary trajectory of protein-protein interactions involving disorder. 5. 15. Engineering inorganic nanostructured composites for boosting H2 and O2 evolution reactions

    Author : Getachew Solomon; Isabella Concina; Alberto Vomiero; Sixto Gimenez; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrogen evolution HER ; Oxygen evolution reaction OER ; Oxygen reduction reaction ORR ; Water splitting; Electrocatalyst; Atomic layer deposition; Core-shell structure; Experimentell fysik; Experimental Physics;

    Abstract : Hydrogen is considered a promising energy source with zero emission of CO2; it can provide higher energy density compared to other sources of energy. The amount at which H2 is produced, and the method of production need further improvement for the advancement of hydrogen energy technologies. READ MORE
