  1. 6. Some recent developments of the homogenization theory with applications

    Author : Leon Simula; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis in applied mathematics is devoted to theoretical and some of the numerical aspects of the homogenization theory. The thesis consists of five papers. In the first paper we give a brief presentation of some basic ideas, which can serve as an introduction and frame to the author´s contributions to the papers in this thesis. READ MORE

  3. 8. Metaphors and Norms - Understanding Copyright Law in a Digital Society

    Author : Stefan Larsson; Rättssociologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; IPRED; copyright; file sharing; conceptual metaphor theory; path dependence; skeumorphs; conceptions; Norms; metaphors; InfoSoc; online anonymity; digital society.;

    Abstract : This is a compilation thesis in the sociology of law, which analyses copyright law in three steps; the legal norms, the social norms and the underlying conceptions in their metaphorical representation. These three steps assist in answering the overarching question: "How do legal and social norms relate to each other in terms of the conceptions from which they emanate or by which they are constructed, and what is the role played by the explicit metaphors that express these norms?" The thesis shows how the development of copyright in Europe, when faced with the digital challenge, has been resiliently path dependent (Infosoc, IPRED and more). READ MORE

  4. 9. On Error-Controlled Numerical Model Reduction for Linear Transient FE² Analysis

    Author : Fredrik Ekre; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; computational homogenization; error estimation; model reduction;

    Abstract : Multiscale modeling is of high interest in the engineering community due to its ability to capture the overall response, while still accounting for processes and structures on underlying fine scales. One standard approach to multiscale modeling is the so-called FE² procedure, where the classic constitutive relation is replaced by a boundary value problem on a Representative Volume Element (RVE) comprising the underlying microscale features. 5. 10. On Methods for Solving Symmetric Systems of Linear Equations Arising in Optimization

    Author : Tove Odland; Anders Forsgren; William W. Hager; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; symmetric system of linear equations; method of conjugate gradients; quasi-Newton method; unconstrained optimization; unconstrained quadratic optimiza- tion; Krylov subspace method; unnormalized Lanczos vectors; minimum-residual method; symmetriska linjära ekvationssystem; konjugerade gradientmetoden; kvasi- Newtonmetoder; optimering utan bivillkor; kvadratisk optimering utan bivillkor; Kry- lovunderrumsmetoder; icke-normaliserade Lanczosvektorer; minimum-residualmetoden; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : In this thesis we present research on mathematical properties of methods for solv- ing symmetric systems of linear equations that arise in various optimization problem formulations and in methods for solving such problems.In the first and third paper (Paper A and Paper C), we consider the connection be- tween the method of conjugate gradients and quasi-Newton methods on strictly convex quadratic optimization problems or equivalently on a symmetric system of linear equa- tions with a positive definite matrix.
