  1. 1. Nonmalignant health effects of arsenic exposure

    Author : Mahfuzar Rahman; Per Gustavsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : arsenic; case-control study; cross-sectional study; diabetes mellitus; drinking water; epidemiology; exposure; keratosis; public health. hypertension; risk factors; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises a series of studies concerning occupational and environmental exposure to arsenic and some novel chronic health effects of this element, namely diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Substantial prevalence of the well-known skin manifestations of arsenic ingestion was also found to occur as a result of environmental exposure through drinking water. READ MORE

  2. 2. Human response to wind turbine noise : perception, annoyance and moderating factors

    Author : Eja Pedersen; Sten Ljunggren; Högskolan i Halmstad; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Noise; Environmental exposure; Wind; Audio-visual interaction; Low-level noise exposure; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; wind turbines; noise annoyance; sound perception; audio-visual interaction; low-level noise exposure;

    Abstract : Aims: The aims of this thesis were to describe and gain an understanding of how people who live in the vicinity of wind turbines are affected by wind turbine noise, and how individual, situational and visual factors, as well as sound properties, moderate the response.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a flat, mainly rural area in Sweden, with the objective to estimate the prevalence of noise annoyance and to examine the dose-response relationship between A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPLs) and perception of and annoyance with wind turbine noise. 3. 3. Exposure, telomere length, and cancer risk

    Author : Huiqi Li; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; exposure; telomere; methylation; chromosomal aberration; cancer risk; rubber fumes; arsenic; welding fumes; diesel exhaust; particulate matter;

    Abstract : Telomeres are tandem repeats of TTAGGG at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes. Telomeres play a key role in chromosome stability and regulation of the cellular lifespan. Telomeres are shortened during cell division, and probably, by not yet well characterised factors in the environment. READ MORE

    Abstract : The objective of the dissertation was to study the cabin environment, and identify personal and environmental risk factors, associated with symptoms, and perception of cabin air quality. Another objective was to study if ban of smoking, and increased relative air humidity on intercontinental flights, could have a beneficial health effect. READ MORE

  5. 5. Aerosol Measurements as Applied for Exposure Characterization

    Author : Andreas Dahl; Ergonomi och aerosolteknologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; railroad; indoor air; environment; occupational health; exposure; isocyanate; airborne particles; station; traffic;

    Abstract : It is important to decrease the burden of disease. This is in part achieved by decreasing risks. The aim of this thesis is to provide a methodology for the characterization of aerosol exposure, which may lead to negative health effects. READ MORE
