  1. 21. Monitoring forest damage : methods and development in Sweden

    Author : Sören Wulff; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The aims of the work this thesis is based upon were to assess past and current methods of monitoring forest damage in Sweden and to propose key components of a new monitoring system that would be better adapted to the information requirements. A utilitarian perspective is adopted in the thesis, thus forest damage is defined as anything that reduces the vitality of trees in a forest or their economic value. READ MORE

  2. 22. Understanding crop and farm management : links to farm characteristics, productivity, biodiversity, marketing channels and perceptions of climate change

    Author : Raj Chongtham Iman; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Agriculture faces challenges in meeting rising demand for food, feed, fibre and fuel while coping with pressure from globalisation, limited natural resources and climate change. Farmers will choose management practices based on their goals and available resources and these practices will influence farm performance. READ MORE

  3. 23. On the representation of precipitation in high-resolution regional climate models

    Author : Petter Lind; Erik Kjellström; Michael Tjernström; Jan Erik Haugen; Anna Rutgersson; Abdel Hannachi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Regional climate modeling; high-resolution; convection parameterization; precipitation; extremes; statistical analysis; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : Weather and climate models applied with sufficiently fine mesh grids to enable a large part of atmospheric deep convection to be explicitly resolved have shown a significantly improved representation of local, short-duration and intense precipitation events compared to coarser scale models. In this thesis, two studies are presented aimed at exploring the dependence of horizontal resolution and of parameterization of convection on the simulation of precipitation. READ MORE

  4. 24. Climate, Conflict and Coping Capacity : The Impact of Climate Variability on Organized Violence

    Author : Nina von Uexkull; Erik Melander; Hanne Fjelde; Jack A. Goldstone; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; civil conflict; communal conflict; climate change; climate variability; Sub-Saharan Africa; Kenya; geo-referenced event data; agricultural dependence; vulnerability; Peace and Conflict Research; Freds- och konfliktforskning;

    Abstract : Understanding the conflict potential of climate variability is critical for assessing and dealing with the societal implications of climate change. Yet, it remains poorly understood under what circumstances – and how – extreme weather events and variation in precipitation patterns affect organized violence. READ MORE

  5. 25. Water Resources Management efforts for best water allocation in the Lake Poopo basin, Bolivia

    Author : Andres Calizaya; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : poverty; institutional arrangements; Bolivian Altiplano; Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis; Water conflict; Lake Poopo; IWRM strategy; local capacity building.;

    Abstract : The Lake Poopo basin, located on the Bolivian Altiplano, is extremely vulnerable to environmental degradation. The basin displays extreme spatial and temporal variations of water resources and rapidly decreasing water quality due to anthropogenic and natural pollution. READ MORE
