6. Fundamental in-situ and ex-situ studies of energy storage related materials including different applications of voltammetry
Abstract : This thesis is a summary and discussion of eight papers dealing with failures and structural aspects of Ni-Cd industrial pocket plate batteries, applications of voltammetry in adsorption studies on goethite (a-FeOOH) surfaces and synthesis and characterisation of nanostructured carbons. The work consists of different areas of chemistry; electrochemistry, structural chemistry and solution chemistry. READ MORE

7. Microbial risk assessment and its implications for risk management in urban water systems
Abstract : Infectious disease can be transmitted via various environmental pathways, many of which are incorporated into our water and wastewater systems. Quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) can be a valuable tool in identifying hazard exposure pathways and estimating their associated health impacts. READ MORE

8. The science of imagining solutions : design becoming conscious of itself through design
Abstract : This dissertation addresses a paradox in design: we currently live in a day and age that is fundamentally conditioned by artifice on all scales, and principled by a deep sense of contingency and possibility. In this world, anything could always be something else. READ MORE

9. Co-firing complex biomass in a CFB boiler : ash transformation, corrosion control and materials selection
Abstract : The effects of greenhouse gas net emissions on global warming, stricter legislation on waste handling, and the pursuit of ever cheaper heat- and power production are all important factors driving the introduction of complex fuels in incineration plants. However - without fundamental knowledge regarding ash transformation, corrosion control, and materials selection – this introduction of potentially economically and environmentally beneficial fuels, might instead cause economic loss and environmentally adverse effects. 10. Probabilistic modeling of fatigue failures
Abstract : Fatigue is a well known failure mode in engineering that can have catastrophic consequences, such as loss of human life. Thus design against fatigue failure is very important. There are many sources of scatter present in fatigue, for instance; the difference in load in-between users of a product, material scatter and scatter in the production. READ MORE
