  1. 1. Muscle function and physical activity in pre-pubertal school children

    Author : Susanna Stenevi Lundgren; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; children; physical activity; exercise; isokinetic muscle strength; vertical jump height; normative; intervention; school transport; DXA; anthropometry; fat mass; lean mass; weight; height; body mass index; girls; boys; pre-pubertal;

    Abstract : Background: Regular participation in physical activity or organized exercise is regarded as one important lifestyle factor that could improve musculoskeletal health, fitness and body composition. For children and adolescents physical activity is important not only in training of the neuromuscular system, coordination and balance, but in a wider perspective, for adopting a lifestyle that possibly reduces the risk of coronary artery disease, obesity, osteoporosis and other contributors to morbidity and mortality in the population. 2. 2. Ticks and Tick-borne Encephalitis Virus : From Nature to Infection

    Author : Naveed Asghar; Magnus Johansson; Patrik Dinnétz; Travis Taylor; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Co-occurrence; Environmental factors; Flavivirus; Ixodes ricinus; Natural foci; Non-coding region; Poly A tract; Quasispecies; Questing ticks; Scandinavia; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Vegetation.; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier;

    Abstract : Vector-borne diseases are an increasing global threat to humans due to climate changes, elevating the risk of infections transmitted by mosquitos, ticks, and other arthropod vectors. Ixodes ricinus, a common tick in Europe, transmits dangerous tick-borne pathogens to humans. READ MORE

  3. 3. Go with the flow : visually mediated flight control in bumblebees

    Author : Nellie Linander; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : insect; vision; Bombus terrestris; flight control; optic flow; centring; flight speed; height; viewing angle; learning flight; Insect; vision; Bombus terrestris; flight control; optic flow; centring; flight speed; height; viewing angle; learning flight;

    Abstract : Despite their small brains and tiny eyes, flying insects are capable of detecting and avoiding collisions with moving obstacles, and with remarkable precision they navigate through environments of different complexity. For this thesis, I have investigated how bumblebees use the pattern of apparent image motion that is generated in their eyes as they move through the world (known as optic flow), in order to control flight. 4. 4. Risk markers and incidence of atrial fibrillation in northern Sweden

    Author : Cecilia Johansson; Lars Johansson; Jonas Andersson; Marcus Lind; Marie Eriksson; Mårten Rosenqvist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Atrial fibrillation; atrial flutter; incidence; provoking factors; types of atiral fibrillation; stroke risk; alcohol consumption; problem drinking; weight; height; weight change; normal blood pressure; high normal blood pressure; Förmaksflimmer; förmaksfladder; incidens; provocerande faktorer; typer av förmaksflimmer; strokerisk; alkoholkonsumtion; alkoholproblem; vikt; längd; viktförändring; normalt blodtryck; högt normalt blodtryck; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinically significant arrythmia with a prevalence of approximately 3% in the general population. Less is known about the incidence of AF. In order to reduce the incidence of AF, it is of essence to identify modifiable risk factors for the disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Quantum Devices from the Assembly of Zero- and One-Dimensional Building Blocks

    Author : Claes Thelander; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum devices; classical mechanics; quantum mechanics; relativity; statistical physics; thermodynamics; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; klassisk mekanik; kvantmekanik; relativitet; gravitation; termodynamik; statistisk fysik; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; single-electron transistor; nanowires; AFM; carbon nanotubes; Fysicumarkivet A:2003:Thelander;

    Abstract : This thesis describes novel methods for the fabrication of nanometer-scale electronic devices, such as single-electron transistors and resonant tunneling diodes, from wire- and dot-shaped building blocks. The first part of the thesis describes the manipulation of metal nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes using an atomic force microscope. READ MORE
