11. Environmental, nutritional and endocrine regulation of metabolic processes in fish
Abstract : Due to seasonal variations in temperature and food availability, fish in temperate regions should be able to make metabolic adjustments to ensure that enough energy is available for the maintenance of basal processes. The major aim of this thesis was to elucidate how the physiology and lipid metabolism of salmonid fish is affected by temperature and food availability, and to clarify aspects of the endocrine control of lipid metabolism. 12. Genetic and Metabolic Markers for the Development of Diabetes after Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract : The aims of this work were to determine the prevalence of postpartum diabetes among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in a prospective study 5 years postpartum; to characterize these women according to insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, autoimmunity and genetics; and to identify possible markers and predictors for the development of manifest diabetes. The subjects were recruited through a regional screening programme in which oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) are routinely offered to all pregnant women. READ MORE

13. Trends in obesity and type 2 diabetes : ethnic aspects and links to adipokines
Abstract : Objective The prevalence of obesity and related diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing worldwide, and the Asian Indian population seems to be particularly susceptible to developing T2DM, even at a low body mass index (BMI). In Sweden, the age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes has not increased despite increasing self-reported obesity. READ MORE

14. Elevated fasting glucose levels in obese children and adolescents : prevalence and long-term consequences
Abstract : Background: Obesity in childhood and adolescents is a major concern in Sweden, as in many parts of the world. Already during the pediatric years is obesity associated with several metabolic complications, which often persists into adulthood. An important metabolic concern is the disturbance of the glucose-insulin homeostasis. READ MORE

15. Retinopathy in subjects with pre-diabetes and electrophysiological studies in diabetes patients with and without retinopathy
Abstract : Diabetes is increasing worldwide and hence the risk developing complications where retinopathy is the theme of this study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of (vascular) retinopathy in subjects with the pre-diabetes stage, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and the development of retinopathy in these subjects during five years.
