  1. 1. Ethanol from Lignocellulose: Physiological Effects of Inhibitors and Fermentation Strategies

    Author : Mohammad Taherzadeh Esfahani; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : fermentation; dilute-acid hydrolyzate; ethanol; hydroxymethyl furfural; furfural; acetic acid; lignocellulose; fed-batch; yeast; pantothenate; control; inhibition; HMF;

    Abstract : Fermentative ethanol production from dilute-acid hydrolyzates of wood using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. Of known inhibitors in hydrolyzates, acetic acid, furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) were found in the highest concentrations (up to about 10 g/l). READ MORE

  3. 3. Probing Control : Analysis and Design with Application to Fed-Batch Bioreactors

    Author : Stéphane Velut; Institutionen för reglerteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Elektronik och elektroteknik; Electronics and Electrical technology; Large scale fermentations; Extremum control; Feeding strategy; Probing control; Fed-batch bioreactors; Automation; robotics; control engineering; Automatiska system; robotteknik; reglerteknik;

    Abstract : In most control problems the objective is to control the output at a desired value in spite of disturbances. In some cases, the best setpoint is not known a priori and it should be found online to optimize the process performance. This thesis examines a probing strategy that can be applied for this class of problems. READ MORE

  4. 4. Improving Ethanol Production from Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates: Fed-batch Fermentation, Yeast Cultivation and Strain Development for Increased Tolerance

    Author : Anneli Petersson; Institutionen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; fed-batch control; Ethanol production; dilute acid hydrolyzate;

    Abstract : Ethanol production by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae from dilute acid lignocellulose hydrolyzate was studied with the aim to improve fuel ethanol production. Specifically, the problem of inhibition was addressed. READ MORE
