  1. 21. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast

    Author : Ilona Sárvári Horváth; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; detoxification; fermentation inhibitors; metabolic flux analysis; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; lignocellulose; ethanol; chemostat; furfural conversion;

    Abstract : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. READ MORE

  2. 22. Extremum-Seeking Control of Industrial-Scale Fermentation Processes

    Author : Ola Johnsson; Institutionen för reglerteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The work presented here is based on two papers, both pertaining to perturbation-based control strategies in industrial fed-batch fermentation processes. The first paper describes a new control strategy for avoiding overflow metabolism in the exponential growth phase of a fermentation, based on analysis of the frequency spectrum of the dissolved oxygen measurement following a periodic perturbation in the feed rate. 3. 23. Analytical tools for monitoring and control of fermentation processes

    Author : Heléne Sundström; Sven-Olof Enfors; Carl-Fredrik Mandenius; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Escherichia coli; flow cytometry; software sensors; viability; inclusion bodies; biomass; specific growth rate; stress; population heterogeneity; process analytical technology.; Biochemical process engineering; Biokemisk och bioteknisk processteknik;

    Abstract : The overall objective of this work has been to adopt new developments and techniques in the area of measurement, modelling and control of fermentation processes. Flow cytometry and software sensors are techniques which were considered ready for application and the focus was set on developing tools for research aiming at understanding the relationship between measured variables and process quality parameters. 4. 24. Volatile Fatty Acids as a Key to Sustainability and Circularity in Polyhydroxyalkanoates Production

    Author : Hoang Danh Vu; Dan Åkesson; Pau-Loke Show; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bioplastics; food waste; polyhydroxyalkanoates; volatile fatty acids; immersed membrane bioreactor; acidogenic fermentation; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : The negative consequences of plastic pollution on both environmental and socio-economic aspects have motivated the development of sustainable and renewable materials to replace the petroleum-based plastic. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which are bioplastics, having an outstanding biodegradability and rather comparable thermal and mechanical properties, are potential alternatives for the replacement of conventional plastics. 5. 25. Microbial Production of Bio-Based Chemicals: A Biorefinery Perspective

    Author : Tarek Dishisha; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biorefinery; platform chemical; organic acid; propionic acid; 3-hydroxypropionic acid; 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde; methacrylic acid; 1; 3-propanediol; Propionibacterium acidipropionici; Lactobacillus reuteri; Gluconobacter oxydans; high cell density fermentation; biotransformation; product inhibition; cell recycle; immobilized cells; chemical catalysis; pdu operon;

    Abstract : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. READ MORE
