16. Mating behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster and its implication to genetic variation
Abstract : Not much is known about the mechanisms affecting the genetic composition of populations of different species. To investigate one of these potential mechanisms, mating behaviour, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, was chosen as an experimental animal. READ MORE

17. Selection and Floral Evolution in Platanthera bifolia and P. chlorantha (Orchidaceae)
Abstract : Natural selection mediated by pollinators has influenced the evolution of floral diversity of the flowering plants (angiosperms). The scope of this thesis was to study: 1) phenotypic selection, 2) mating systems, and 3) floral shifts involved in plant speciation. Model plant species were Platanthera bifolia and P. chlorantha (Orchidaceae). READ MORE

18. Outsiders and Others : Queer Friendships in Novels by Hermann Hesse
Abstract : This dissertation explores how characters who embody outsiderness and/or otherness intersect with and connote queerness—such as, for instance, homoeroticism and nonconformism—in the novels Peter Camenzind (1904) and Der Steppenwolf (1927) by German-language author Hermann Hesse (1877–1962).In most of Hesse’s novels, the narrative revolves around a male protagonist who is characterized as an outsider. 19. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient
Abstract : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 20. Appropriations of Shakespeare's King Lear in Three Modern North American Novels
Abstract : This thesis examines the creative appropriation of Shakespeare in theory and practice. It is based on close readings of King Lear alongside three appropriations of the play in works of fiction by three North American women writers: Jane Smiley, Anne Tyler, and Margaret Atwood. The aim is to demonstrate how a ‘palimpsestic’ reading, i.e. READ MORE
