  1. 6. Enhanced Methane and Hydrogen production in Reverse Membrane Bioreactors via Syngas Fermentation

    Author : Konstantinos Chandolias; Hariklia N. Gavala; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; syngas fermentation; CH4; H2; cell washout; inhibitors; mass transfer; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : of waste treatment processes, such as the anaerobic digestion. This biochemical process converts organic substrates into biogas, with anaerobic microorganisms. However, some types of substrates have low bio-degradability due to its recalcitrance or the presence of inhibitors. READ MORE

  2. 7. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast

    Author : Ilona Sárvári Horváth; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; detoxification; fermentation inhibitors; metabolic flux analysis; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; lignocellulose; ethanol; chemostat; furfural conversion;

    Abstract : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. READ MORE

  3. 8. Fermentation and Cultivation Technology for Improved Ethanol Production from Lignocellulose

    Author : Andreas Rudolf; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; Fermentation; Lignocellulose; Hydrolysis; Bioethanol;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis has been aiming at improving ethanol production from lignocellulose. Ethanol from renewable resources is receiving renewed attention due to apprehensions of global warming and dwindling oil reserves. Lignocellulose constitutes a potential raw material source for large scale ethanol production. READ MORE

  4. 9. Development of Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation for Production of Ethanol from Softwood

    Author : Malek Alkasrawi; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical technology and engineering; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; spruce; softwood; fermentation; cultivation; Tween-20; SSF; recirculation; Ethanol production; process streams;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the development of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) in order to improve the economy of the softwood-to-ethanol process. The effect of process stream recirculation on ethanol production from steam-pretreated softwood based on SSF was investigated for two process cases. READ MORE

  5. 10. Fermentation of quinoa, canihua and amaranth to degrade phytate and improve mineral bioavailability

    Author : Vanesa Castro-Alba; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Quinoa; Canihua; Amaranth; Iron; Zinc; Calcium; Phytate; Fermentation; Accessibility; Bioavailability;

    Abstract : Plant-based diets are the main source of nutrients for vegetarians worldwide and for low-income inhabitants of developing countries, such as in rural areas of Bolivia. These diets may contain high levels of mineral inhibitors such as phytate that impairs mineral absorption in the human gut. READ MORE
