  1. 1. Iron absorption in man - diet modification and fortification

    Author : Michael Hoppe; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Iron absorption; Serum iron; Relative bioavailability; Elemental iron; Iron bioavailability; Iron fortification; Dietary modification; Developing countries;

    Abstract : Background: Iron (Fe) deficiency is globally the most common form of nutrient deficiency. The approach to combat this problem can be divided into two major strategies a): increasing the dietary Fe bioavailability by diet modification, or b): increasing the Fe intake through fortification. 2. 2. Factors Influencing Iron Dialyzability and Uptake in In Vitro Models

    Author : Susan Salovaara; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ferric iron; iron dialyzability; Caco-2 cells; pea protein; organic acids; gastrointestinal model; transit time; iron absorption; ferrous iron;

    Abstract : The availability or iron from a meal is influenced by numerous factors. This thesis deals with three of them: organic acids, plant proteins (pea and soy), and transit time through the stomach and small intestine. READ MORE

  4. 4. Casting Identities in Central Seclusion : Aspects of non-ferrous metalworking and society on Gotland in the Early Medieval Period

    Author : Ny Björn Gustafsson; Lena Holmquist; Heidemarie Eilbracht; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Archaeometallurgy; Non-ferrous; Archaeological prospection; Metal detection; Geophysical survey; Sweden; Magnetometry; Gotland; Iron Age; Viking Period; Archaeological Science; laborativ arkeologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to investigate and interpret late Iron Ageand Early Medieval traces of non-ferrous metalworking on the islandGotland, Sweden. Gotland was not, based on the archaeological record, anintegrated part of the common Scandinavian culture. READ MORE

  5. 5. Theoretical studies of mononuclear non-heme iron active sites

    Author : Arianna Bassan; Per E. M. Siegbahn; Sason Shaik; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum chemistry; enzyme catalysis; iron enzymes; Quantum chemistry; Kvantkemi;

    Abstract : The quantum chemical investigations presented in this thesis use hybrid density functional theory to shed light on the catalytic mechanisms of mononuclear non-heme iron oxygenases, accommodating a ferrous ion in their active sites. More specifically, the dioxygen activation process and the subsequent oxidative reactions in the following enzymes were studied: tetrahydrobiopterin-dependent hydroxylases, naphthalene 1,2-dioxygenase and α-ketoglutarate-dependent enzymes.
