21. Identification and characterization of candidate genes for neuroblastoma development
Abstract : Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common tumor during infancy. It arises from undifferentiated cells in the sympathetic nervous system and is characterized by both clinical and genetic heterogeneity. One of the features of NBs with unfavorable outcome is loss on distal chromosome 1p. READ MORE

22. Physiological aspects of the glomerular filtration barrier
Abstract : Proteinuria is associated with progression of kidney disease and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiological alterations resulting in proteinuria are obscure, although proteinuria is often associated with pathological changes in the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB). READ MORE

23. Islet xenograft rejection : studies in the pig-to-rodents and pig-to-primate models
Abstract : The aims of this thesis was: 1) to compare islet allo- and xenograft rejection in rats, using immunosuppression with CsA in a mixed allogeneic-xenogeneic islet transplantation model, 2) to evaluate the efficacy of various immunosuppressive drugs, with special reference to Leflunomide, in preventing islet xenograft rejection in the pig-to-rat model, 3) to perform an immunohistochemical study of porcine islet xenograft rejection in primates including primates treated with CsA+DSG, and 4) to study the metabolism and excretion of porcine C-peptide in mice, with special reference to the use of donor-specific C-peptide for monitoring islet xenograft function. In summary, the results were as follows: 1. READ MORE

24. Expression and Regulation of Neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the Islets of Langerhans
Abstract : This thesis deals with the expression, localization and regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans under normal and experimental conditions. NPY is widely distributed in the mammalian nervous system and belongs to a family of closely related petides also comprising peptide YY (PYY) and pancreatic polypeptide (PP). READ MORE

25. Effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on vitamin A storage in rat hepatic stellate cells
Abstract : The polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), popularly called dioxins, are persistent pollutants with widespread occurrence in the environment as well as in human food and tissues. 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the most toxic dioxin, as well as other dioxin-like compounds induce a broad spectrum of biochemical and toxic effects, many of which occur at extremely low doses or concentrations.
