1. Pathophysiology of intrauterine asphyxia
Abstract : Background: The premature infant is at increased risk of cerebral white matter damage, oftenreferred to as periventricular leucomalacia, PVL, which is associated with later developmentof cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment. The etiology of PVL remains unclear, but ischemia-reperfusion followed by generation of free radicals and intrauterine infections havebeen suggested to play an important role. READ MORE

2. Inflammation and ischemia in the developing brain - modifying effects of hyperoxia and adrenoceptor activation
Abstract : Inflammation and ischemia are common causes of perinatal brain damage. Ventilation with pure oxygen has previously been the prime choice during resuscitation following fetal asphyxia. READ MORE

3. Cerebral Injury in Perinatal Asphyxia, epidemiological, clinical, neurophysiological and neuromatabolic investigations
Abstract : Perinatal asphyxia with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and cerebral palsy (CP) in infants born at term. The aim of the thesis was to investigate epidemiology of perinatal asphyxia, and to investigate early clinical neurological symptoms after perinatal asphyxia in relation to cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRgl) measured by 18-FDG-PET, neurophysiological function, some biochemical markers, also in relation to long-term outcome.
