1. Mutation Analysis and Hypercholesterolemia: Studies in FH patients and in healthy middle-aged men with high, low, or increasing cholesterol levels during a six-year follow-up (the CRISS study)
Abstract : Our aims were to characterize familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in a Swedish FH population and to further elucidate the clinical expression and treatment response in relation to genotype. Secondly, we wanted to identify gene variants, which may have impact on cholesterol levels in apparently healthy subjects. READ MORE

2. Structural and functional studies of C4b-binding protein (C4BP)
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is complement inhibitor C4b-binding protein (C4BP), on which we have performed both structural and functional studies. Complement is part of the innate immune defence and eliminates microbes, solubilises immune complexes and is involved in the clearance of apoptotic cells. READ MORE

3. Coding for multiple-access and fading channels
Abstract : This thesis treats some information-theoretical and coding aspects of communication over multiple-access and fading channels. It consists of a general introduction and seven papers. In code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communication, many users have access to the channel simultaneously. READ MORE

4. Mechanisms of phagocytosis resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes
Abstract : A distinguishing feature of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is their ability to resist phagocytosis in whole human blood in the absence of type-specific antibodies, a property that is dependent on the expression of the surface associated M proteins. A common characteristic of M proteins is their interaction with a variety of host proteins including the complement regulatory protein factor H (FH) and fibrinogen that plays a key role in coagulation. 5. Familial hypercholesterolemia in Sweden : genetic and clinical studies
Abstract : Prevention of premature disease and death from cardiovascular complications of atherosclerosis is an important goal for public health, and the early identification of individuals with increased risk is an important goal of modern medicine. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is one of the most common monogenic diseases (1/250 to 1/300) where strong evidence of positive health effects of intervention has been established. READ MORE
