  1. 11. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. 12. On interference suppression techniques for communication systems

    Author : Hongxia Zhao; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CDMA; QPSK; fixed-point implementation; DQPSK; rapid single flux quantum RSFQ ; MUD; unequal BER; fiber-optic communications; unequal SER; ISI;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns interferencesuppression techniques in two different communication systems.In the first part we study fiber-optic systems with practical non-ideal transmitters and receivers, which give rise to intersymbol interference (ISI). READ MORE

  3. 13. Phase-Noise Compensation for Space-Division Multiplexed Multicore Fiber Transmission

    Author : Arni Alfredsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; detection; estimation; space-division multiplexing.; phase noise; multicore fiber; Coherent fiber-optic communications;

    Abstract : The advancements of popular Internet-based services such as social media, virtual reality, and cloud computing constantly drive vendors and operators to increase the throughput of the Internet backbone formed by fiber-optic communication systems. Due to this, space-division multiplexing (SDM) has surfaced as an appealing technology that presents an opportunity to upscale optical networks in a cost-efficient manner. READ MORE

  4. 14. Optical Transmission Systems Based on Phase-Sensitive Amplifiers

    Author : Samuel L I Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; optical injection locking; fiber nonlinearities; optical fiber communication; fiber nonlinearity mitigation; four-wave mixing; fiber optic parametric amplification; low-noise amplification; phase-sensitive amplification; fibre optics;

    Abstract : The capacity and reach of today's long-haul fiber optical communication systems is limited by amplifier noise and fiber nonlinearities. Conventional, phase-insensitiveamplifiers (PIAs), have a quantum limited noise figure (NF) of 3 dB at high gain, meaning that with a shot-noise limited input signal the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)is degraded by at least 3 dB.
